Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent decades, the world has witnessed a dramatic increase in the prevalence of metabolic diseases, despite the availability of various pharmacological options for treatment and prevention. While these existing medications play a crucial role, limitations in their use have ignited renewed interest in natural products derived from plants. Advances in technology and the development of new experimental models have fueled this resurgence, particularly in the realm of discovering new drugs for metabolic diseases.

Many ancient medical systems across Asia, Africa, and Latin America have a long history of exploring the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants. However, a significant portion of this vast herbal arsenal remains scientifically unvalidated, hindering its broader recognition by health authorities. This gap presents a missed opportunity, as numerous traditional phytotherapeutic formulations have demonstrated promising preclinical and clinical activity against prevalent metabolic diseases, often through innovative mechanisms of action.

This Special Issue aims to bridge this gap by showcasing recent research advances in utilizing natural products for metabolic disease treatment. It features a selection of articles highlighting both in vitro and in vivo studies that explore the bioactivity of natural products against pathologies such as obesity, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). By illuminating the scientific basis behind traditional practices and promoting further research, we hope to pave the way for greater integration of natural products into mainstream healthcare systems.

Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
