Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Natural bone is a hard and dense connective tissue which facilitates movement, provides structural support, and protects various organs. Bone loss due to diseases or injuries can cause a lower quality of life, massive health care costs, and economic burdens. The poor clinical outcomes of autografts, allografts, and metal-based mega prostheses demand the use of a synthetic biomaterial-based approach in order to generate a robust and durable solution in the aid of bone regeneration. There is an unmet challenge in terms of the design and fabrication of complex, hierarchical, and patient-specific biomaterials for bone regeneration.

Therefore, this Special Issue, titled “New Advances in Biomaterials and Bone Regeneration: Updates and Future Directions”, aims to collate new and original experimental and theoretical research, as well as comprehensive reviews, that integrate the current knowledge of multifunctional biomaterials for bone regeneration. The topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Bioinspired and biomimetic materials for bone regeneration;
  • Synthesis and characterization of novel ceramic, metallic, polymeric, and composite biomaterials for bone tissue engineering applications;
  • Microstructure-based constitutive models for biomaterial design;
  • The stability and degradation of biomaterials under physiologic conditions;
  • Cell–biomaterial interactions in vitro;
  • Mechanical characterization of biomaterials;
  • In vivo performances of biomaterials;
  • Novel techniques for the characterization and simulation of biomaterial properties;
  • The fabrication of biomaterials with bone-inspired hierarchical microstructures;
  • Reports on clinical trials of biomaterial performance.
