Dear Colleagues,
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has become the mainstay in managing coronary artery disease and continues to evolve dynamically. To put this into perspective, a diagnosis of a heart attack fifty years ago would primarily involve weeks of bed rest with very limited medication options, compared to the current practice of safe percutaneous intervention; now, patients can even be discharged on the same day following a PCI. This is a testament to the amount of research and innovation that has gone into this field. Be it from CT FFR coronary angiograms to being able to perform detailed physiological assessments, including of the microvasculature, intra-coronary imaging to understand specificities of the plaque, such as vulnerable plaques, to significant improvements in equipment to offer patients very high-risk PCI, this field has seen tremendous innovation and growth in recent years. Despite these advances, there are still many unanswered questions and areas of improvement, as cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of death globally.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to highlight some of the recent advances and scope for improvement in our understanding of coronary disease, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. We welcome original manuscripts and reviews in the true spirit of the specialty: to question, seek, and grow.
