Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Energy efficiency is an important consideration in the water and wastewater sector, as treatment plants are responsible for consuming almost 35% of the energy used by municipal facilities. It is worth noting that the costs of both technological processes and wastewater transport will be factored into the price for wastewater collection and treatment. It is therefore reasonable to optimise the wastewater treatment process technically and economically by reducing the electricity consumption rate. However, it is important to acknowledge that the energy intensity of these processes can only be reduced within certain limits. In addition to rationalising consumption, it may be beneficial to explore alternative methods of obtaining energy. One potential solution to this problem is to utilise 'clean' energy production technologies, such as renewable energy. This technology has the potential to reduce combustion product emissions and slow the rate of consumption of fossil resources. Wastewater and sewage sludge have the potential to serve as raw materials for anaerobic digestion, heat recovery and hydropower.

We cordially invite all researchers in this field to contribute original research or review articles to this Special Issue of the journal Energies. The articles should report on the design and modelling of wastewater treatment and sludge management processes for efficient and sustainable energy production, encompassing the following themes: disintegration, anaerobic digestion, biogas, biohydrogen, bioenergy recovery from wastewater produced by hydrothermal processing biomass, circular economy, energy recovery from wastewater and sewage sludge, and reducing CO2 emissions from wastewater treatment plants.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
