Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Machining processes constitute a very important component in modern manufacturing industries, such as automotive, aviation, and biomedical. The course of machining processes significantly determines its final effects, including surface quality or dimensional and geometrical accuracy. The surface structure of manufactured components is an important quality indicator in both visual and functional terms. The machined surfaces should exhibit suitable operational properties, which are particularly important in the case of the cooperating components. The precision of the manufactured components and the determination of the values of dimensional and geometrical deviations are also crucial.

The course and final result of the machining process depends on many factors, starting with the selection of appropriate machining parameters, through to the instrumentation, cutting tools, and cooling methods used. All these factors affect the surface condition, accuracy, and properties of the component. Continuous research and development in this area is therefore necessary. Considering the presented relationships, the aim of the present Special Issue is to compile original research and review papers on the course and effects of machining processes. The topics of the Special Issue mainly include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Machining processes of materials;
  • Surface texture after machining;
  • Dimensional and geometrical accuracy;
  • Coordinate metrology;
  • Machining-induced strain,
  • Machining-induced residual stress;
  • Tool wear mechanism;
  • Machining dynamics;
  • Application of cutting tool coatings;
  • Cooling and lubrication techniques in machining;
  • Machining processes optimization;
  • Simulations of machining processes.

We look forward to receiving your contributions of original research papers and review articles.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
