Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The intersection and subsequent dialogue among researchers with different, but complementary, scientific backgrounds has favored the strong interdisciplinary character of contemporary materials science research. The exchange of knowhow by researchers working in several technological and scientific research fields has given rise to the current trends in development of various methods and applications able to address fundamental questions in some frontier areas of interest within biomedicine.

Flexible bioelectronics based on innovative materials, such as biocompatible organic materials exhibiting mixed ion–electron conductivity, specific chemophysical properties, and tunable functionalities, has paved the way towards numerous applications in the biomedical field, from diagnostics (e.g., biorecognition, biosensing, biosignal recording) to therapy (e.g., drug delivery, neural interfacing).

The combination among three factors—namely, the unique properties of a wide set of organic materials and compounds, the development of novel and scalable deposition methods for organic or hybrid organic/inorganic thin films and interfaces, and the implementation of strategies for the design of improved and novel devices—has contributed to the success of bioelectronics.

This Special Issue is accordingly aimed at collecting research papers, reviews, and perspective articles describing recent advances in the field of bioelectronics based on organic and hybrid organic–inorganic films and interfaces, and fabrication using conventional and enhanced methods (solution processing of organics, organic vapor phase deposition, and electrochemical methods). In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Manufacturing/characterization of (flexible) bioelectronic devices such as electrolyte-gated, ion sensitive and electrochemical transistors, screen-printed electrodes;
  • Biosensing based on different biorecognition elements (such as enzymes, aptamers, DNA, antibodies, etc.) and electrochemical/electrical transduction strategies;
  • Bioelectronic interfaces (e.g., neuromorphic devices, functional electrodes and arrays for biosignal recording);
  • Deposition techniques of organic films and/or interfaces (e.g., solution processing, 3D printing, electrochemical methods);
  • Drug delivery (design and novel strategies, delivery by electric triggering);
  • Bioelectronics textile and wearable biosensors;
  • Materials and interfaces for bioelectronics;
  • Thin films for cellular and/or tissue interfacing.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
