Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biomaterials play a crucial role in orthopaedic engineering and regenerative medicine, and aim to restore or enhance the functionality of musculoskeletal tissues and organs. This Special Issue provides a platform for researchers and scholars to present their novel findings, cutting-edge advancements, and innovative techniques in the field of biomaterials for orthopedic engineering and regenerative medicine.

Addressing a wide range of topics, this Special Issue seeks to explore the design, development, characterization, and application of biomaterials for orthopedic applications. Various aspects are encompassed, including, but not limited to, scaffold materials, tissue engineering constructs, drug delivery systems, and the incorporation of stem cells or growth factors.

Articles addressing the challenges associated with orthopedic conditions, such as bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon, and intervertebral disc injuries, are of particular interest. Additionally, investigations that focus on the interaction between biomaterials and host tissues, biocompatibility, bioactivity, and immunomodulatory effects are welcome.

Through the dissemination of advancements in biomaterials for orthopaedic engineering and regenerative medicine, this Special Issue aims to foster dialogue, collaboration, and innovation among researchers, engineers, and clinicians in this rapidly evolving field. This Special Issue of Bioengineering, entitled “Biomaterials for Orthopedic Engineering and Regenerative Medicine”, will encompass original research articles and reviews on the following topics:

  1. Live cell printing towards addressing clinical challenges of bone tissue engineering;
  2. 3D-bioprinted scaffolds for osteochondral defects;
  3. Smart biomaterials for cartilage regeneration;
  4. Biomaterials for tissue engineering;
  5. Natural polymer-based bioink for orthopedic implants;
  6. Theranostic approaches for orthopaedic applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
