Dear Colleagues,
Glaucoma is an irreversible blinding disease that involves distinct optic nerve degeneration and retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death associated with corresponding visual field defects. Intraocular pressure and other non-IOP factors, such as vascular factors, have been addressed as possible causes for glaucomatous damage development and progression. Other possible mechanisms have been suggested, including autophagy, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation. However, there are still many mysteries to unravel to understand the complex pathophysiology of the disease’s development and progression. The aim of the current Special Issue is to explore the recent advances in the field to better understand the complex mechanisms responsible for glaucomatous optic nerve damage and RGC death. We invite the submission of innovative research papers and review articles that discuss glaucoma pathophysiology.
