Biomolecules Editor-in-Chief Prof. Dr. Juerg Baehler's new paper "Quantitative analysis of fission yeast transcriptomes and proteomes in proliferating and quiescent cells" will be published in Cells in October 2012. This paper reports the cellular numbers for RNAs and proteins in proliferating and non-dividing cells of fission yeast. Most mRNAs are expressed at only 1-10 copies/cell, while corresponding proteins show greater abundance and range, from less than 100 to over 1 million copies/cell. Only a minority of long non-coding RNAs are expressed at less than 1 copy/cell. In the smaller non-dividing cells, the protein content changes substantially and RNA concentrations greatly decrease. These RNA and protein concentrations provide important insight into cell regulation and function.
