Manuscript Preparation

Please use the template file to prepare your submission. Please do not insert any graphics (schemes, figures, etc.) into a movable frame, which can superimpose the text and make the layout tasks very difficult.

Important note for edited books: If you are the Editor of a collection of articles written by different authors, please give special attention to consistency. This includes reference formatting, spellings, capitalization, italics, abbreviations, hyphenation, etc.

Book Submission

All manuscripts sent for publication are strictly and thoroughly peer-reviewed by experts to ensure highest quality. Please see the Peer-Review and Editorial Process below for more information.

If you have a manuscript ready and would like it to be considered for publication, after rigorous peer-review, please fill out the Book Proposal Form and hand it in via e-mail ( ). Note that submission does not guarantee publication. Important: Monographs are submitted as an entire manuscript. For edited books or Festschriften you may compile the individual articles into one manuscript or you may submit them as separate files (please name the files correctly: 00_Preface, 01_Chapter1, 02_Chapter2, etc.). Please note that you are required to provide a complete Table of Contents and hand in all file(s) together.

Please enclose a cover letter stating the authenticity of your work and declaring your authorship. Check in your cover letter whether you supplied at least five referees and make sure the formatting and language editing has been done before submission.

Peer-Review and Editorial Process

All MDPI Books go through the same peer-review process than other manuscripts of our publishing program and therefore benefit from many years of experience. MDPI takes the responsibility to enforce a rigorous peer-review, together with strict ethical policies and standards, to ensure bringing high quality works to the field of scholarly publication. Accepted articles are professionally copy-edited, English proofread and edited where necessary.

Unfortunately, cases of plagiarism, data falsification, inappropriate authorship credit, and the like, do arise. MDPI takes such publishing ethics issues very seriously and our editors are trained to proceed in such cases with a zero tolerance policy. To verify the originality of content submitted, we use CrossCheck (powered by iThenticate) to check submissions against previous publications.

Authors should suggest at least five potential referees with the appropriate expertise, although the Editor will not necessarily approach them. Please provide as detailed contact information as possible (address, homepage, phone, e-mail address). The proposed referees should be experts in the field who can provide an objective report—they should not be current collaborators of the authors, nor have published with any of the authors of the manuscript within the last five years. Proposed referees should be from different institutions than the authors. You may suggest appropriate Advisory Board members as potential referees. Another possibility is to select referees from among the authors that you frequently cite in your manuscript.

Language Editing

MDPI Books are mostly published in English, so it is essential that all manuscripts be submitted in grammatically correct English for effective refereeing and quick publication. For this purpose we ask that non-native English speakers ensure their manuscripts are checked before submitting them for consideration. We suggest that for this purpose an English-speaking colleague revise your manuscript before submission. A fee of 150 CHF per 100 pages will be charged to authors if extensive English corrections were needed. If you wish to publish your manuscript in a language other than English, please contact us.

Book Processing Charges (BPC)

MDPI applies a modest book processing charge of 3000 CHF to 5000 CHF for every accepted manuscript in order to cover the editorial and production costs. The final price depends on the volume of the publication. The BPC includes project management, thorough peer-review and careful copy-editing, book layout, ISBN and the distribution of your book. An additional fee of 150 CHF per 100 pages may apply if extensive language editing and/or formatting is required. Please note that many funding agencies explicitly allow the use of research grants for the payment of processing charges for publishing in open access format. Your institution may be part of MDPI’s Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP) in which case associated authors receive discounts on the BPCs for accepted manuscripts.
