Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Advances in wired and wireless communications and microelectronics have led to increasingly accurate, reliable, and responsive smart sensor technologies, which can be produced cost-effectively thanks to automatic manufacturing and economies of scale.

This enables the integration of sensors in our daily surroundings and everyday objects, opening up new possibilities for systems and services that will make our environments more intelligent, connected, efficient, and secure. Thanks to sensor fusion and machine learning, sensorized buildings can dynamically adapt and react to preserve the safety of people and the structure, or to offer a wide range of value-added services.

The objective of this Special Issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and new developments related to the technology and applications of sensorized buildings, including but not limited to:

  • Applications of intelligent buildings systems:
    • Smart environments and habitat monitoring
    • Ambient assisted living and smart homes
    • Smart retail spaces
    • Safer and more efficient manufacturing
    • Green and energy-efficient buildings
    • Smart emergency and evacuation systems
    • Infrastructure safety, monitoring and management
    • Process, services and workflow optimization
    • Personal safety and threat management
    • Biological or chemical hazards detection
  • Technology:
    • New sensor technologies
    • Communication technologies
    • Security
    • Energy harvesting and management
    • Zero power sensors
  • Information processing
    • Visualization and simulation
    • Context awareness, activity recognition
    • Data fusion, sensor synergies, opportunistic sensing
    • Adaptivity, personalization, lifelong learning

Original papers describing completed and unpublished work, not currently under review by any other journal, magazine, or conference, are solicited.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
