Special Issue: GEOBIA in a Changing World—GEOBIA, 18–22 June 2018, Montpellier, France

Our planet is dramatically changing… and in response, humanity is facing global challenges of such magnitude that world-wide cooperation is essential to preserve our shared natural and human resources. To succeed, we need an improved planetary understanding and implementation of strategies at both global and local scales. While remote sensing technologies offer tremendous capacities with potential to manage the future and understand the past, relevant multi-scale geographic information methods are needed to generate timely knowledge from these BIG data sources.
Key to this success is the emerging geospatial discipline of Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA). Now in its 7th Biennial International Conference, we extend a world-wide invitation to scientists, professionals and users from academia, industry, the public sector and government to share insights and solutions at GEOBIA 2018 in Montpellier, France. Our goal is to deepen our knowledge, develop new theories, and implement operational strategies to better understand our changing world ranging from pixels to ecosystems and global sustainability.
This Special Issue is now open for submission. In order to complement invited papers presented at GEOBIA 2018, we call upon researchers and scientists world-wide engaged in developing and applying GEOBIA to submit papers to help better understand the many facets of planetary change.
