Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM) editorial team, we are delighted to present a new Special Issue on the topic of “Pharmacoepidemiology”, Guest Edited by Professor Kathleen Bennett from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Dublin, Ireland.

Pharmacoepidemiology, the utilization and effects of drugs in populations, is a growing field. The introduction of several new medicines, and the increasing use of existing medicines, as well ageing populations, have contributed to the international interest in pharmacoepidemiology. Medicines are often used for multiple indications and in individuals with multiple morbidities, leading to potential benefits but also risks or adverse effects. The safe, effective, and quality use of medicines, as well as their costs and associated health outcomes, is of relevance to a wide audience of patients, health care professionals, researchers, policy and decision makers, regulators and others. Advanced statistical and epidemiological methodologies are often applied in pharmacoepidemiological research to help reduce or eliminate bias and confounding in real world or observational data.

The present Special Issue aims to examine the advances in pharmacoepidemiology and application to real world data from different settings. Of particular interest is the evaluation of health outcomes associated with the use of medicines in populations, but other areas to consider include pharmacovigilance, drug utilization research and comparative effectiveness research.
