Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Complementary (similar terms include alternative, integrative, unorthodox, natural, holistic, functional, etc.) medicine is an umbrella term for a wide range of diverse treatments such as acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal medicine, and homeopathy. It has become popular and is beginning to gain acceptance by the medical establishment. Unfortunately, much of what is currently being written about the subject in both medical journals and the lay press seems woefully uncritical. On this background, it seems important to dedicate a Special Issue of JCM to the critical evaluation of complementary medicine. The plan is to discuss complementary medicine from the perspective of different medical fields. The authors of invited papers include some of the leading thinkers in their respective areas of inquiry. Our goal is to alert readers to the many problems and risks that are associated with the use of complementary medicine.
