Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The proposal is to invite papers around the theme of designing for areas that are vulnerable to disasters. Many of these areas are waiting for the disaster to happen, after which they recover from the flood, earthquake, tsunami, and fire. In the context of climate change, these threats will only increase in the future. After disasters, rebuilding focuses on food, shelter, medicine, and water issues, but for a long-term future, a smart adaptive design is necessary. Not only for the recovery of the area, but also to become more resilient to future threats. In this Special Issue, articles are invited that research the design contribution to disaster-vulnerable areas, describing designs in anticipation of a future disasters, or designs for the recovery of these areas. Examples and possible articles are about design approaches in the Fukushima area (Japan), design response to hurricane Sandy (US), and shelter and housing for disasters in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Haiti, and others.
