The Assessment of Climate Variables and Geographical Distribution on Residential Drinking Water Demand in Ethiopia
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The authors identify the impact of climate variables on residential water demand in three geographically and spatially dispersed towns (Arba Minch, Ziway, and Debre Birhan) in Ethiopia. The topic is timely and with possible applicability. However, the paper requires certain revisions:
- The introduction is poor and should include a review of the state of the art on assessment of climate variables and geographical distribution on residential drinking water. Current similar studies must be included in this section.
- The abstract should include the main results of the study.
- It would be convenient to include a summary table with the climatic variables of the three study areas in the section "Climate data ".
- The methodology used for the study is correct. Can the methodology used in this study be extrapolated to other areas of the world? Justify its usefulness.
Justifying the use of principal component analysis. Why didn't you another variable selection method?.
- The section "Summary and conclusions" is well developed and includes the main results, conclusions and future work. However, it would be more appropriate to refer to this section as conclusions and future work.

The article concerns the drinking water demand in Ethiopia. It may be interesting for readers of Water. The following requests/suggestions should be taken into account to improve the quality of the manuscript.
- The influence of climate on water consumption is obvious. In my opinion a lot of work to get nothing better than a simple data analysis. It is not clear what is the novelty of this study. Why do you contribute to the progress of science? Please explain this issue.
- The study is based on total water consumption in relation to, inter alia, for the season or year. I do not know what practical conclusions can be drawn from this type of analysis for water companies in Ethiopia that are struggling with a water deficit.
- The article concerns water consumption and not water demand, the title should be modified.
- Please explain the very large variation in the daily water consumption per capita, which is the basic indicator used in the design of water devices and pipes. The unit in Figure 3 is incorrect.
- The article should be formatted in accordance with the journal's requirements. Sub-points should be used instead of bold (Introduction).
- Study Area should not be in the Introduction section.
- Figure 1 is of poor quality.
