Dear Authors

The paper entitled “Application of Convolutional Neural Network to Defect Diagnosis of Drill Bits” is considered accurately. The topic is so interesting and well prepared. The paper could be accepted in Applied Sciences as an original research paper after following major revision comments/questions:

1.      Referencing format is not acceptable and there are many errors as “reference source not found. All these errors should be edited considering referencing format of journal.

2.      Why Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) not used for analyzing acoustical frequencies? All reasoss should mention in reply letter or manuscript?

3.      If FFT used in revisions, add several graphical analyses of that as several figures.

4.      Vertical and horizontal axis’ title are not clear in Figure 6!

5.      Introduction part could improve by referring to the investigations mention to the relation of acoustical features of drilling process and mechanical properties of materials. Following references could be helpful for this purpose and authors should use them in introduction part for increasing comprehensiveness of this part:

a.      Investigating the acoustic signs of different rock types based on the values of acoustic signal RMS; M Khoshouei, R Bagherpour, MH Jalalian, M Yari; Rudarsko-geološko-naftni zbornik (The Mining-Geological-Petroleum Bulletin)

b.      Developing a novel model for predicting geomechanical features of carbonate rocks based on acoustic frequency processing during drilling; M Yari, R Bagherpour, M Khoshouei; Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment 78 (3), 1747-1759

c.       Investigating an innovative model for dimensional sedimentary rocks characterization using acoustic frequencies analysis during drilling; M Yari, R Bagherpour; Rudarsko-geološko-naftni zbornik 33 (2), 25-25

d.      Implementing acoustic frequency analysis for development the novel model of determining geomechanical features of igneous rocks using rotary drilling device; M Yari, R Bagherpour; Geotechnical and Geological Engineering 36 (3), 1805-1816

6.      The paper needs to recheck for grammatical points. There are many mistakes.

7.      Abbreviation part should be added to text containing all abbreviations used in text.

Best regards
