Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Comments to authors:

This paper “Characteristics of Corrosion Products of Friction-type 3 High-Strength Bolted Joints of Steel Bridge: A Case Study”. I found the work to be severely lacking in content and have recommended major corrections. My specific comments are included below, in no particular sequence.

Suggestion to authors

1)            Check all abbreviations in the text and give the full names when they are first cited in the abstract and introduction.

2)            The paper needs improvement in its structure. It also needs to be more decisive in the argument it is presenting.

The introduction could be improved by quoting more recent research on inhibitor corrosion (see for instance: Exploration…….acid solution, 2021, 10, Pages 368 - 387, I. J. of Corrosion and Scale Inhibition; Inhibitive……acid environment, 2021, 10, Pages 634–648, I. J. of Corrosion and Scale Inhibition; A study……surface investigation, 2021, 44, Pages 2337-2341, Materials Today: Proceedings; Terephthalohydrazide……..theoretical approaches, 2021, 65, Pages 12-22, KOM–Corrosion and Material Protection Journal; A mini review…….environment, 2021, 10, Pages 861-884, I. J. of Corrosion and Scale Inhibition).

3)     Experimental methods need to be rewritten and cited from literature work.

4)        A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is required for methodology.

5)            The work's limitations and implications should be discussed more clearly.

6)        Seek to compare the experimental results with earlier work to see which is better.

7)            Quality of the Figures should be improved.

8)        Conclusion: Please revise this part as well as this conclusion part needs to conclude every result that have been obtained in a precise and understandable manner so that the viewers could understand well the overall findings that have been obtained.

A moderate English revision by a mother tongue reviewer is necessary throughout the text to remove a few typos and rectify a few grammatical errors that remain in the manuscript.

1.       Authors can highlight the need for the study and its application

2.       Authors have not deeply analysed the critical causes of corrosion

3.       It is expected to provide the suggestions and recommendations of the study

4.       The microstructure studies such as micromorphology and XRD should have more details the details of sample, instruments, and its inference

5.       The discussion section is weak, improve it

6.       Refer some latest literature

7.       Add some critical comparison/analysis with the existing study

This paper analyzes the major diseases of friction high strength bolted joints (FHSBs) to examine the characteristics of joint corrosion products in steel bridges and exposure factors.

The work is devoted to applied research, can be accepted into the journal.

-Please present the possibility of using a non-destructive control method and present the possibility of using it in your work? To what extent is it applicable?

-The SEM images do not show element distribution maps, please clarify

- What steel can be compared to in China, the U.S., Russia, etc. Please add this information

-suggest measures to protect such connections?

-Conduct model studies of corrosion of steel joints or cite any works in which there are similar discussions

The presented material relates to the level of student research work. Corrosion products are considered, and what is new in this? It would be necessary to establish the degree of depth of corrosion damage, change in strength characteristics, try to predict the remaining service life of products. It is also possible to compare the corrosion rate of elements with various methods of protection and develop recommendations on the optimal way to increase the service life of products.

As presented, the article has no scientific subtext and significance.

The changes brought clarity to the practical significance of the conducted research. However, the studies are narrowly focused, since they describe the corrosion of products near the Yellow River, which reduces the readership who might be interested in the results presented in the article.

The article says only about the elements characteristic of the soil of the river, but the corrosion of the elements in question does not occur in the soil. The authors need to give at least the qualitative composition of the medium affecting the joint connections under consideration (gases, chemical compounds, chemical elements). This will allow correlation with the data of corrosion studies by other scientists.
