Effect and Mechanism of Roughness on the Performance of a Five-Stage Axial Flow Compressor
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The main advantage of the text is a good agreement with the experiment of the calculated characteristics of the compressor. The main value is the result in Figure 5 and its description in the text.
Reasoning about the special role of the 5th step seems to be erroneous. The area of increased entropy in Figure 6 is the result of an increase in head loss from the first to the next stage, and not proof of the special role of the 5th stage.
Reasoning about equations 7 - 10 seems unnecessary. Equation 6 implies that the authors have pressures and temperatures at the stages’ boundaries at their disposal. In this case, it would be possible to calculate the efficiency of each stage with polished and rough blades. This would be sufficient to judge the role of roughness.
