Author Biographies

Fiona O'Neill obtained her primary degree in Food Science from University College Cork (UCC) in 1996. She subsequently completed M.Sc. degrees in Food Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry from UCC. She worked for a time in the pharmaceutical industry and is currently employed as an R&D Manager for TheraDep Ltd. while also completing a Ph.D. at University College Dublin under the guidance of Prof. Bourke. Her main research areas are plasma, implant coating and cell culture.
Liam O’Neill obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from University College Cork in 1996 and 2000, respectively. He was previously a Research Scientist and IP Manager for Dow Corning Plasma Solutions and then worked for a number of small companies focusing on surface modification technologies before founding TheraDep, Inc. in 2015. He is currently acting as CTO of TheraDep and actively developing coatings for medical and life science applications. His research keywords include plasma medicine, surface analysis and coating.
Paula Bourke is a Professor in the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, a Conway Institute Research Fellow and a member of the UCD Institute of Food and Health. She graduated from the University of Limerick in 2001 with a Ph.D. in the microbiological safety of novel non-thermal processing technologies. During her time as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Limerick and as an Arnold Graves Research Fellow at DIT, she researched both thermal and non-thermal processing and their interactions with food-borne pathogens and resistance mechanisms. Her research is primarily in the areas of sustainable processing innovations and novel antimicrobial technologies.
