Etsuo Chihara graduated from Kyoto University in 1974. He worked as a Position Assistant at Miyazaki University from 1986 to 1989. Then, he moved to Kyoto University as an Associate Professor from 1989 to 1993 and was promoted to Position Director at the Sensho-kai Eye Institute in 1993. He is now an Emeritus Member of the Japanese Glaucoma Society. His research topics mainly include glaucoma and diabetic neuropathy.
