Prof. Dr. Jean-Pierre Wigneron is the Head of INRAE Bordeaux Remote Sensing Lab, Fellow IEEE, Board of Remote Sensing of Environment, Scientific committee of Theia (French Remote sensing data center), Editor in Chief of Frontiers in Earth Observation and Land Monitoring. He is listed in the Highly Cited Researchers 2021. Jean-Pierre Wigneron received his Master's degree from ENSAE School (SupAƩro) and his PhD from the University of Toulouse. Prof. Dr. Jean-Pierre Wigneron developed pioneer work in the simultaneous retrievals of soil moisture and vegetation biomass from passive microwave remote sensing observations and developed the L-MEB model, the forward model of operational algorithms of the SMOS satellite mission from ESA (European Space Agency). He coordinated the development of several VOD microwave vegetation indexes (vegetation optical depth) from satellite missions (SMOS, ASCAT, AMSRE/2, SMAP) which are now recognized as major tools in monitoring forest carbon stocks at continental scales. His main interest is in the use of passive and active microwave remote sensing to monitor the carbon and water cycles of forest areas at national/continental scales.
