Author Biographies

Ph.D. in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences from the University of León. Degree in Psychology from the Complutense University of Madrid, with a Master's Degree in Research in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and a Master's Degree in Psychology and Sports. Author of international publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals (JCR/SJR) and presenter at national e international conferences. Her doctoral thesis focused on nutrition and physical activity among older adults in Spain and China, developed through research stays at the Beijing Sport University and Shanghai University of Sport in China, owing to her connection with the martial art Wushu (Judo and Associated Sports Federation), where she competes as a High-Level Athlete. She has taught university courses in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, Sports Management, Physiotherapy, and Nursing at various Spanish universities. She also served as the Director of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences at Antonio de Nebrija University and currently holds a public position at the University of León, where she is a collaborator in the VALFIS research group. In addition, she has developed training collaborations with educational and training centers and has led awareness campaigns on health-related topics within the sports sector. She successfully balances her dual career as a DAN athlete with her academic pursuits and is an active member of leading national and international institutions.
José Gerardo Villa Vicente is a Professor and Ph.D. in Medicine and Surgery (University of Salamanca, 1986 and 1992) with a specialization in Sports and Exercise Medicine (University of Oviedo, 1990), a Full Professor in the area of Physical Education and Sports with extensive university teaching experience (faculty member at the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences–formerly INEF of León–since 1987). He has an outstanding research output and is currently recognized as one of the leading experts in the field of Sports Medicine. He leads the Research Group (VALFIS) at the University of León. He has extensive experience in scientific consulting, medical assistance, assessment, and professional practice as a sports physician, working with high-performance athletes across various disciplines (cycling, football, basketball, beach volleyball, traditional wrestling, athletics). Notably, he has a distinguished career in professional cycling, having served as a team physician for different teams within the Deportivo Deportpublic Group. He is currently part of the medical services team at the High-Performance Sports Center (CAR) of León (National Sports Council). In addition to his involvement in multiple Olympic disciplines, he served as the team physician for the Spanish Olympic Beach Volleyball Team at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and, more recently, was the physician for the Spanish Paralympic Cycling Team at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Paralympic Games.
María Pilar Sánchez Collado has a Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the University of Salamanca. She is a Full Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, specializing in Physiology, with a teaching career that began in 1988. She initially taught at INEF and, since 1990, has been a faculty member at the University of León. Throughout her academic career, she has taught various undergraduate courses, including Pathophysiology for the Bachelor's in Biological Sciences, Physiology and Pathophysiology for the Bachelor's in Nursing, Human and Exercise Physiology for the Bachelor's in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, and Nutrition Physiology in Physical Activity and Sports for the same degree program. In addition to her undergraduate teaching, she has been involved in several Master's programs, such as Innovation and Research in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, Healthy Aging and Quality of Life, and Training and Sports Performance. Her research interests focus on Exercise Physiology, Sports Nutrition, and Ergogenic Aids within the field of Sports Sciences. She leads the Research Group (VALFIS) at the University of León and has made significant contributions to the field through her publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals (JCR/SJR). Moreover, she has actively participated as a presenter at both national and international conferences.
