Dr. Carol George is professor emerita and a
developmental psychologist at the Department of Psychology, Mills College at
Northeastern University, in Oakland California, USA. She received her Ph.D.
from the University of California Berkeley in 1984. Her developmental
psychopathology approach addresses typical and atypical development and
sequelae to elucidate the mechanisms of transmission and effects of attachment
trauma on children, parents, and infant and adult mental health. As an
internationally renowned attachment expert, Dr. George has authored numerous
papers and book chapters on adult and child attachment and caregiving and their
clinical applications. Dr. George is the primary author of attachment and
parenting assessments, including the Adult Attachment Interview, the Adult
Attachment Projective Picture System, the Attachment Doll Play Assessment, the
Caregiving Interview, and the Caregiving Helplessness Scale. Her books include
Attachment Disorganization (1999), Disorganized Attachment and Caregiving
(2011), The Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (2012), Neuroscience of
Attachment (2017), and Clinical Applications of the Adult Attachment Projective
Picture System (2022). She has received research funding from the National
Institute of Child Health and Development, and Mills College faculty
development grants and the Mary Metz Teaching Excellence Grant. Her current
research focus is the intergenerational transmission of attachment trauma and
shame.
