Author Biographies

Dr. Thanos Balafoutis is an architect and lighting designer who graduated from the School of Architecture of the University "Federico II" of Naples, Italy. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Lighting Design (Hellenic Open University) and a PhD in Architectural Lighting (Hellenic Open University). He is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hellenic Open University with a scholarship. He has participated in several lighting-related scientific and educational research projects, served as a juror in an international design competition, was a reviewer in scientific journals, supervised several theses of postgraduate students, and authored numerous publications in scientific journals and conferences. His research interests cover all aspects of light, with particular emphasis on issues related to architectural lighting and light art, as well as issues in the field of historic buildings, cultural heritage, and architectural digitization. He is also involved in scenography and lighting design in theatrical plays. He is a founding member of the Hellenic Lighting Association (HELIA), a member of Europeana, the Technical Chamber of Greece, and the Panhellenic Union of Architects.
Christina Skandali is a Diploma Architect (AUTH) and Lighting Designer (MSc, UCL). Shas is a freelance Lighting Consultant and an Adjunct Professor at the Hellenic Open University (MA Lighting Design). At the same time, she is a PhD Candidate researching energy related road lighting design procedures. Her main research interests are road lighting, smart city applications and energy saving, while she is also interested in sustainable design and energy efficiency in buildings.

Prof. Lambros T. Doulos has been a doctoral student at the National Technical University of Athens (School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) since 2010, holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics (University of Athens) since 1999 and a Master's degree in Environmental Physics (University of Athens) since 2002. He is an Associate Professor at the Hellenic Open University in the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design, specializing in Lighting Technology. He has many years of experience in open and distance higher education and more than 15 years in higher education. He is a Research Physicist working on research projects, measurements, studies and lighting projects. He has collaborated with lighting companies and carried out numerous lighting projects and studies, energy-saving projects and studies in artificial lighting systems and projects to combat light pollution.
Stelios Zerefos is an architect (B.A.(hons), M.Arch.II, Ph.D.) and professor of the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design of the Hellenic Open University since 2009. He is the Director of the Master’s Programme “Lighting Design”, Director of the M.Sc. “Protection of cultural heritage and monuments of nature from the effects of climate change” and Director of the Lighting Design Laboratory. Apart from the Hellenic Open University he was invited to teach in graduate and post-graduate courses at several European Universities. He is a member of national and international scientific organizations, an IALD educator member, as well as editor and reviewer in international scientific journals such as Sustainability, Energies, Energy and Buildings and Solar Energy. He has scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and is also the author of four books in architecture, lighting design and building simulation. He is the scientific coordinator of several research and educational projects in the Hellenic Open University and  has also coordinated three finished research projects and participated in another 12 as a research member. He has actively participated in the creation of six postgraduate programmes, one undergraduate programme and two short VET programmes at HOU. He has administrative experience as a member of the HOU’s Board of Directors, Dean of the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design, as well as member in administrative committees.
