Azam Ali is an Associate Professor and Director in the Bioengineering program at the Centre for Bioengineering and Nanomedicine, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago. He specialises in biomaterials science and bioengineering. His research activities include designing and developing novel biomaterials, molecularly engineered nanostructure materials, understanding materials' structure–function relationships and properties, and fabrication of micro-/nano devices for applications in biomedical and regenerative medicine. He is an internationally recognised biomaterials expert. Currently, he holds 18 international patents, of which 14 patents have already been granted in the USA, EU, and many other countries. Three of his medical devices are currently commercialized in over 17 countries, including the USA, EU, AU, and NZ. He has been awarded the New Zealand (Bayer) Innovator of the year 2010 for his outstanding contribution in the Health and Science areas.
