Recent Developments in Multifunctional Biomaterials and Coatings
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue titled "Recent Developments in Multifunctional Biomaterials and Coatings" aims to explore cutting-edge developments in the design and application of novel biomaterials and surface coatings that offer multiple functional attributes. This collection of research articles and reviews seeks to highlight interdisciplinary approaches that merge materials science, bioengineering, chemistry, and nanotechnology to push the boundaries of traditional biomaterials and coatings.
Multifunctional biomaterials and coatings are crucial for advancing various medical devices, implants, and therapeutic strategies. They can provide tailored surface properties to improve biocompatibility, enhance mechanical strength, resist microbial colonization, facilitate targeted drug delivery, etc.
The focus of this Special Issue will be on innovative materials that not only support the basic requirements of biocompatibility and bioactivity but also integrate additional functionalities like self-healing, responsiveness to environmental stimuli, antimicrobial activity, and the ability to modulate cellular behaviors.
Contributions to this Special Issue include innovative fabrication techniques such as layer-by-layer assembly, electrospinning, 3D printing, laser deposition, and nanoprecipitation, which are critical for developing these sophisticated materials. Papers may cover new synthetic approaches, detailed material characterization, in vitro and in vivo performance assessments, and clinical translation efforts. We invite submissions that present significant innovations in material formulation, elucidate their action mechanisms, and discuss future possibilities for application in the biomedical sector.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
