Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The retina is the gate to our most important sensory modality. It encodes a vast amount of visual information that is pre-processed and forwarded to the rest of the visual system. The cell types of the retina include neurons (ganglion cells, amacrine cells, bipolar cells, horizontal cells, and photoreceptors), as well as non-neuronal cells (astrocytes, microglia, and Müller cells). Although retinal information processing is better understood than that of the brain as a whole, it has been insufficiently explored to understand retinal mechanisms deeply and tackle vision-deteriorating diseases, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, myopia, retinal vascular disease, traumatic brain injuries, and many others that can rob us of the ability to see.
Importantly, the retina is the only part of the brain found outside the bony skull, making it more vulnerable and easily accessible as a model.
This Special Issue aims to widen our knowledge on all levels of retinal neuroscience, from the molecular level to the physiology, including the details of healthy and diseased retinas.
To explore this topic, we look forward to receiving your original research manuscripts and reviews.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
