Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

World Food Day is celebrated globally every year on October 16 to commemorate the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. It is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security, as well as inclusive and sustainable agricultural and rural transformation, including the World Food Program, the World Health Organization and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

The objective of this Special Issue is to commemorate World Food Day in 2024 by highlighting cutting-edge research articles and comprehensive review papers that explore the path and consequences of and policies for rapid, inclusive and sustainable rural economic transformation, food security and the green development of agriculture in developing countries.

Rural economic transformation involves rising agricultural productivity and the commercialization and diversification of agricultural production patterns and livelihoods, which also includes expanded off-farm employment of rural labor. This Special Issue, intended for a wide and multidisciplinary audience, presents some of the most recent advances and novel approaches exploring the nature of rural economic transformation (e.g., the stages and speed of rural transformation), the consequences of rural economic transformation (e.g., food security, growth, inclusivity and sustainability), the green development of agriculture and institutions, policies and investments to facilitate rapid, inclusive and sustainable rural transformation, food security and the green growth of agriculture in developing countries. Numerical and experimental investigations for basic or applied research, representative case studies and research on models and methods for supporting successful rural transformation, food security and green development in agriculture are welcome, as are studies on structural transformation from agriculture to industry and service sectors.
