Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wastewater treatment is a crucial component of environmental sustainability, addressing the challenges of water pollution and resource scarcity. With rapid industrialization and urbanization worldwide, the volume of wastewater generated has significantly increased, posing severe threats to aquatic ecosystems and public health. Traditional wastewater treatment methods, while effective to a degree, often fall short in addressing the complexities of modern contaminants and the need for sustainable practices. Emerging technologies in wastewater treatment, combined with robust environmental monitoring systems, offer promising solutions to these pressing issues.

The integration of advanced treatment technologies with sustainable practices ensures not only the treatment of wastewater but also the recovery of valuable resources. Moreover, the implementation of smart monitoring systems allows for real-time data acquisition and analysis, enhancing the efficiency and adaptability of wastewater treatment processes. This Special Issue aims to explore the latest advancements in wastewater treatment technologies and their integration with sustainable environmental monitoring to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

The primary aim of this Special Issue is to compile cutting-edge research and reviews that address the challenges and innovations in wastewater treatment technology under the umbrella of sustainable environmental monitoring. By doing so, this Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state-of-the-art technologies, their applications, and their impact on environmental sustainability.

This Special Issue aligns with the broader scope of the journal Sustainability, focusing on ecological, social, and economic dimensions of sustainable development, which is particularly significant considering the interdisciplinarity of this field. Wastewater treatment is inherently linked to these dimensions as it plays a vital role in maintaining water quality, public health, and ecological balance, all of which are fundamental to sustainable development. The insights gained from this Special Issue will contribute to the ongoing discourse on sustainable practices, offering practical solutions and theoretical frameworks that can be applied across various sectors.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Innovative wastewater treatment technologies;
  • Energy-efficient wastewater treatment systems;
  • Recovery and reuse of resources from wastewater;
  • Life cycle assessment of wastewater treatment technologies;
  • Policy and regulatory frameworks promoting sustainable wastewater treatment;
  • Environmental monitoring and smart systems;
  • Development and application of real-time monitoring technologies;
  • Case studies and practical applications;
  • Successful implementations of innovative treatment technologies;
  • Comparative studies on traditional vs. advanced treatment methods;
  • Emerging contaminants and their treatment;
  • Climate change impacts on wastewater treatment processes;
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to wastewater treatment and environmental monitoring.

By addressing these themes, this Special Issue will highlight the multifaceted nature of wastewater treatment technology and its critical role in sustainable environmental monitoring. Researchers, practitioners, and policymakers are invited to contribute their findings, share their experiences, and propose innovative solutions that can drive the field forward. Through this collaborative effort, we aim to foster a deeper understanding and practical advancements that support sustainable development goals globally.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
