Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The bioeconomy, which is a circular and sustainable biobased economy, includes the conversion of renewable bioresources and biological wastes streams into biofuels and bioenergy. Biological wastes, i.e., biowastes, are renewable bioresources generated from agriculture, wastewater treatment, and agro industry and are a largely untapped source for the production of value-added biofuels and bioenergy, which can be recovered from biowastes. Their recovery implements biological, thermal, and chemical processes that provide alternative biofuels and bioenergy products, e.g., biobutanol, bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, biohydrogen, biochar, bio-oil, syngas, and bioelectricity. Resource biorecovery thus supports sustainability goals by reinjecting products into the circular bioeconomy by maximizing the resources and energy-use efficiencies, forming a further ecologically sound and healthy environment through the conversion of biowastes into biofuels and bioenergy and emphasizing socio-economic development by creating new employment opportunities and ground-breaking technologies.

This Special Issue focuses on the bioconversion and thermochemical conversion processes of biowaste streams from the agricultural and agro-industrial systems as well as wastewater treatment plants into value-added biofuels and bioenergy to develop a sustainable circular bioeconomy using biorefineries. The International Energy Agency, Bioenergy Task 42 on Biorefineries, has defined biorefining as the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of bio-based products, especially bioenergy (biofuels, power, and/or heat). Meanwhile, the core of the biorefineries is creating new employment opportunities. Furthermore, these biorefineries have zero-waste, zero-emission, and efficient resource and energy use within cleaner production processes to promote sustainability.

This Special Issue scrutinizes and analyzes prospective bioconversion and thermochemical conversion techniques of biomass into bioenergy and biofuels, taking into consideration their integration into the circular sustainable bioeconomy. Relevant areas include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • All types of solid, liquid, and gaseous biofuels;
  • Bioconversion processes;
  • Bioelectricity generation;
  • Thermochemical conversion processes;
  • Biorefining biomass into biofuels and bioenergy;
  • New and renewable sources of bioenergy;
  • Biomass, biowastes, and agricultural wastes;
  • Sustainable bioenergy regeneration methods;
  • Bioenergy generation efficiency;
  • Heat and power generation from biomass;
