Personalized marketing presents a powerful but delicate strategy, as its benefits can be negated by rising consumer privacy concerns. To illuminate this tension, this study investigates what causes personalization to fail, focusing on the interaction between the level of message personalization and situationally activated privacy concerns. We conducted a 3 (Message Personalization: Low, Medium, High) × 2 (Situational Privacy Concern: Low, High) between-subjects experiment with 360 participants. These personalization levels were designed as an ecologically valid “intrusiveness ladder,” moving from a generic message to one using contextual data and to one using personally identifiable information (PII). Situational privacy concern was experimentally induced using a news article prime, after which participants were exposed to one of the marketing messages. The results revealed a significant interaction effect that demonstrates a critical “tipping point.” In the low privacy concern condition, increasing personalization boosted purchase intention. Conversely, when privacy concerns were activated, a ‘backfire effect’ occurred: highly intrusive, PII-based personalization was no more effective than a generic message and was significantly less effective than moderate, contextual personalization. Our findings provide causal evidence for the moderating role of situational privacy concern, demonstrating that activating this state is a key condition that triggers a non-linear consumer response. Practitioners must calibrate the level of data intrusiveness, as the most aggressive tactics can be counterproductive when consumer privacy sensitivities are high. Full article

As environmental conservation and community development gain importance, ecotourism has emerged as a significant segment of the global tourism industry. However, the cultural factors that drive tourist behavior in this domain remain underexplored. This research examined how power distance belief (PDB), interacts with the type of tourism content shared on social media (conspicuous versus experiential) to influence travelers’ ecotourism intentions. To test our hypotheses, we conducted two experimental studies using a 2 (PDB: high vs. low) × 2 (tourism content type: conspicuous vs. experiential) between-subjects design. Participants for both experiments (N = 480) were recruited through an online survey platform. In the experiments, participants’ PDB was situationally primed, and tourism content type was manipulated using specifically created fictitious posts adapted from a real social media platform. Other key variables were measured using validated multi-item scales. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and moderated mediation analysis (PROCESS Model 15). The findings reveal that travelers with high PDB show higher ecotourism intentions when exposed to conspicuous content, whereas travelers with low PDB exhibit higher intentions when exposed to experiential content. This interactive effect is mediated by travelers’ social comparison motives. These findings offer novel insights into the motivations underlying ecotourism behavior by identifying distinct pathways through which social media can promote sustainable tourism behaviors, and provide practical guidance for eco-destination managers to design targeted marketing strategies that encourage sustainable tourism practices across different consumer segments. This study examines first responder training to deliver realistic, adaptable, and scalable solutions aimed at equipping personnel to handle high-risk, rapidly developing scenarios. The proposed method leverages Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and digital twins to enable immersive and situationally relevant training for security-critical incidents. The method is structured into three distinct phases: definition, digitization, and implementation. The outcome of this approach is the creation of virtual training scenarios that simulate real situations and incident dynamics. The methodology employs photogrammetric reconstruction, simulation of human behavior through locomotion, and virtual security systems, such as surveillance and drone technology. Alongside the methodology, a case study of a large public event is presented to illustrate its feasibility in real-world applications. This study offers a comprehensive and adaptive structure for the design and deployment of digitally augmented training systems. This provides a practical basis for enhancing readiness in a range of operational domains. Full article

We examine how site-based path planning algorithms for enclosed spaces can be enhanced with situational detail. Addressing this question has led to value propositions in facility design, where there is often a call to match, map, and merge infrastructure considerations and configurations with potential implications for individual, group, and crowd flow through enclosed spaces. Responding to this question also invokes computational propositions, as facility design software is often computationally conservative with few resources devoted to simulation. We show that situational factors—the peculiarities and momentarily fleeting shifts in an individualized context that embody people in their movement through spaces—can be embedded into traditional, computationally lean path planning heuristics in ways that are actionable in widely used facility design software. We achieve this with algorithmic expansion of well-known planning algorithms using node-based architectures that permit the inclusion detail if, when, and where needed in a hyper-localized situational context that nests within site considerations. We demonstrate a proof of concept for use in the popular Unity 3D modeling platform, showing that situationally sensitive path planning can be achieved during the simulation run time of prototypical design scenarios for enclosed spaces with moving individuals, groups, and crowds. Reflection is considered to be a core component of professional development in teacher education, yet little is known about the motivational determinants of reflective activities in everyday school contexts. Drawing on theories of learning and motivation, we introduce and conceptualise the “need to reflect” as a situationally and personally influenced motivational factor that mediates the relationship between classroom experiences and subsequent reflective processes. We operationalise this construct through a newly developed item and examine it in a diary study involving N = 79 in-service primary school teachers over ten school days. Multilevel analyses reveal that daily classroom-related hassles—especially failed attempts to address disturbances—are positively associated with teachers’ need to reflect, whereas successful classroom management reduces this need. Furthermore, emotional exhaustion moderates this relationship: Teachers with higher levels of emotional exhaustion reported a stronger link between unsuccessful disturbance management and their need to reflect. Self-efficacy in classroom management is not shown to have a moderating effect. These findings suggest that the need to reflect fluctuates across situations and is influenced by individual teacher characteristics, offering new insights into motivational components underlying reflective processes with significant implications for teacher education and professional development. Requirements are most commonly expressed in natural language, but alternative media can be employed. Previous research has established the viability of model diagrams and engineering drawings for requirements expression. To move beyond viability, three (3) factors—Cognition, Quality, and Accountability—were developed to assess the potential impact of using alternate media requirement expressions in systems engineering. The alternate media candidates were evaluated against the factors and their subfactors, which determined that the inclusion of alternate media may be expected to positively impact requirements expression in all three areas. For Cognition, improved communication is predicted as alternate media are situationally preferable based on their inherent context offerings and systematically shorter comprehension times for spatial information, which potentially reduces the cognitive burden on the reader. For Quality, alternate media are predicted to improve the appropriateness of requirement expressions within a specification. For Accountability, improvement is predicted within a project as alternate media can mitigate ambiguity, improve feasibility, and enhance verification and validation efforts. The contribution of this research is the establishment of a conceptual basis for creating multi-media requirement documentation that amplifies the desired characteristics of requirement expressions to better communicate stakeholder information. Meat is a major source of dietary protein and fat across the globe. Red and white meat are the major terms consumers use to refer to types of meat; however, these terms do not fully encompass the range of nutrients provided by meat sources. Red meat refers to meat from mammalian skeletal muscle, while white meat refers to poultry. Red and white meat both provide a wide range of nutritional components in the context of fatty acids, amino acids and micronutrients. Importantly, it has been demonstrated that amino acid profiles differ between red meat and white meat as well as between different sources of red meat. Red meat is a complete source of dietary amino acids, meaning it contains all essential amino acids (EAAs), and in addition, it contains all the non-essential amino acids (NEAAs). Red meat is also the most abundant source of bioavailable heme-iron essential for muscle growth and cardiovascular health. Red meat has been indicated as a major contributor to the rising incidence of metabolic disorders and even colorectal cancer. However, it is important to note that while red meat consumption is linked to these conditions, it is typically the overconsumption of red meat that is associated with obesity and other metabolic symptoms. Similarly, the preparation of red meat is a key factor in its link to colorectal cancer as some methods of preparation produce carcinogens while others do not. Finally, red meat may also be situationally more beneficial to some groups than others, particularly in the cases of sex and aging. For pregnant women, increases in red meat consumption may be beneficial to increase the intake of semi-essential amino acids, while in the elderly, increases in red meat consumption may better preserve muscle mass compared with other dietary protein sources. The ubiquitous use of mobile devices along with the amount of traffic, transportation services, and travel pattern data available has led to the emergence and deployment of smartphone applications for providing information about personal travel management. Several of these travel apps are aimed at voluntary travel behavior change (VTBC) to support and increase sustainable mobility, and have led to the development of research to investigate their influence on travel behavior. Here, the aim is to study the role of technophilia and goal-framing theory in the intention to adopt and situationally use a prospective VTBC travel app. A Structural Equation Model is developed with the aim of empirically testing a sample of 971 respondents collected in two suburban corridors in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The results support that goal-framing theory is important for explaining the adoption of VTBC travel apps. Gain and normative motives are more relevant than hedonic motives, pointing to the importance of their tangible benefits. Frequent car users may benefit from VTBC travel apps in terms of encouraging behavioral changes, supporting sustainable mobility management solutions. The results also outline the importance of technophilia and the current use of travel apps in influencing the intention to use VTBC apps. Full article

Energy management strategies typically employ reinforcement learning algorithms in a static state. However, during vehicle operation, the environment is dynamic and laden with uncertainties and unforeseen disruptions. This study proposes an adaptive learning strategy in dynamic environments that adapts actions to changing circumstances, drawing on past experience to enhance future real-world learning. We developed a memory library for dynamic environments, employed Dirichlet clustering for driving conditions, and incorporated the expectation maximization algorithm for timely model updating to fully absorb prior knowledge. The agent swiftly adapts to the dynamic environment and converges quickly, improving hybrid electric vehicle fuel economy by 5–10% while maintaining the final state of charge (SOC). Our algorithm’s engine operating point fluctuates less, and the working state is compact compared with Deep Q-Network (DQN) and Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithms. This study provides a solution for vehicle agents in dynamic environmental conditions, enabling them to logically evaluate past experiences and carry out situationally appropriate actions. Migraines are one of the most common and expensive neurological diseases worldwide. Non-pharmacological and digitally delivered treatment options have long been used in the treatment of migraines. For instance, migraine management tools, online migraine diagnosis or digitally networked patients have been used. Recently, applications of ChatGPT are used in fields of healthcare ranging from identifying potential research topics to assisting professionals in clinical diagnosis and helping patients in managing their health. Despite advances in migraine management, only a minority of patients are adequately informed and treated. It is important to provide these patients with information to help them manage the symptoms and their daily activities. The primary aim of this case study was to examine the appropriateness of ChatGPT to handle symptom descriptions responsibly, suggest supplementary assistance from credible sources, provide valuable perspectives on treatment options, and exhibit potential influences on daily life for patients with migraines. Using a deductive, qualitative study, ten interactions with ChatGPT on different migraine types were analyzed through semi-structured interviews. ChatGPT provided relevant information aligned with common scientific patient resources. Responses were generally intelligible and situationally appropriate, providing personalized insights despite occasional discrepancies in interaction. ChatGPT’s empathetic tone and linguistic clarity encouraged user engagement. However, source citations were found to be inconsistent and, in some cases, not comprehensible, which affected the overall comprehensibility of the information. ChatGPT might be promising for patients seeking information on migraine conditions. Its user-specific responses demonstrate potential benefits over static web-based sources. However, reproducibility and accuracy issues highlight the need for digital health literacy. The findings underscore the necessity for continuously evaluating AI systems and their broader societal implications in health communication. Full article

Circularity is becoming increasingly important for Distribution System Operators (DSOs) as their infrastructure ages and needs replacement, alongside compliance with stringent environmental regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). However, implementing circular economy (CE) practices is challenging due to the fragmented nature of the current CE landscape and its limited interaction with practical application. A longitudinal case study at the Dutch DSO, Liander, focusing on the circularity of distribution transformers, was conducted to generate prescriptive knowledge on operationalizing circularity. This resulted in the formulation of six design propositions for circular action that suggest to (1) initiate small-scale circularity experiments; (2) involve technical and strategic experts; (3) synergize circularity with more urgent, primary goals; (4) translate circular initiatives bottom-up and top-down; (5) collaborate with other DSOs; and (6) create multidisciplinary teams. The propositions suggest to situationally select interventions and build upon the outcomes of previous interventions in order to incrementally contribute to circular change. Other DSOs could use these propositions to optimize their strategy toward circular action. Additionally, the findings contribute to advancing scientific knowledge to implementable actions in order to initiate and sustain circular change. Full article

Pragmatist philosophy of religion has, since the early days of the tradition, developed distinctive accounts of (what we now call) “situated” religious cognition highly relevant to currently ongoing discussions in this developing field. This paper focuses on William James’s pragmatism as an important example of such an approach in the philosophy of religion. Some central “situational” themes in James are identified, and special attention is given to the relation between the (situation-dependent) concepts of belief and hope in Jamesian pragmatism. The ontological status of the “objects” of situated religious cognition is thereby also briefly discussed. Full article

Providing storm surge risk information at multi-day lead times is critical for hurricane evacuation decisions, but predictability of storm surge inundation at these lead times is limited. This study develops a method to parameterize and adjust tropical cyclones derived from global atmospheric model data, for use in storm surge research and prediction. We implement the method to generate storm tide (surge + tide) ensemble forecasts for Hurricane Michael (2018) at five initialization times, using archived operational ECMWF ensemble forecasts and the dynamical storm surge model ADCIRC. The results elucidate the potential for extending hurricane storm surge prediction to several-day lead times, along with the challenges of predicting the details of storm surge inundation even 18 h before landfall. They also indicate that accurately predicting Hurricane Michael’s rapid intensification was not needed to predict the storm surge risk. In addition, the analysis illustrates how this approach can help identify situationally and physically realistic scenarios that pose greater storm surge risk. From a practical perspective, the study suggests potential approaches for improving real-time probabilistic storm surge prediction. The method can also be useful for other applications of atmospheric model data in storm surge research, forecasting, and risk analysis, across weather and climate time scales. Full article

This article builds on insights from both critical heritage studies and Indian Ocean studies to argue that there is a need to delve deeply into how, by whom, and why heritage is practiced. Empirically, the practice of afternoon tea in Penang (Malaysia) provides insights into habits, manners, and customs in order to explore heritage as a social practice. Drawing on ethnographic field research on the island of Penang in Malaysia, this article demonstrates how the multiple forms, as well as the changing production, practice, and preservation, of local cultural heritage are used to strategically and situationally create identities in dependence of the “other” and in response to a national heritage narrative. In contrast to what is nowadays often considered a colonial vestige, I maintain that these cultural heritage elements are not foreign but part of specific local cultural heritages. Full article

A common denominator of many disease-connoting cues is benign physical abnormalities, such as birthmarks and obesity. Previous studies found that among people whose BIS was activated (e.g., people who were exposed to situational disease prime or chronically concerned about disease threat), disease-connoting cues could make people feel threatened by infectious disease and induce their malevolence. Malevolence is a necessary feature of malevolent creativity (MC), which is defined as creativity that deliberately leads to harmful or immoral results. According to the motivated focus account of creativity, a threat could promote creativity when creativity is relevant to the threat. Thus, infectious disease threats might increase malevolent creativity. However, whether infectious disease threats could influence MC is unknown. Therefore, the current study aims to explore the effect of infectious disease threat on MC by two disease-connoting cues (birthmark, obesity). In Study 1 (n = 174), a 2 (threat prime: infectious disease, natural disaster) × 2 (disease-connoting cue: birthmarked face, normal face) between-subjects design was used. Participants were asked to complete a malevolent creativity task (MCT). In Study 2 (n = 131), we used a perceived vulnerability to disease scale (PVD) to assess people’s dispositional tendencies of concerns about disease and selected high as well as low PVD participants. A 2 (PVD: high, low) × 2 (disease-connoting cue: obese, average-weight) between-subjects design was used. Participants were asked to complete the negotiation task to assess their MC. The results of Study 1 showed that, compared with participants in the normal face condition, participants in the birthmarked face condition showed higher MC fluency and total MC when they were exposed to situational disease prime. Compared with the natural disaster prime group, the infectious disease prime group showed higher MC fluency and total MC when they were provoked by a birthmark person. The results of Study 2 showed that, compared with the average-weight condition, the obese condition led to higher MC fluency and originality among high PVD participants. Compared with low PVD participants, high PVD participants showed higher MC fluency and originality when they negotiated with an obese person. Our studies suggest that among people whose BIS is situationally or chronically activated, birthmarks and obesity could increase MC, and people’s malevolent creativity might be induced by disease-connoting cues during the pandemic.
