Spontaneous SSCD Auto-Plugging: Clinical, Electrophysiological and Radiological Evidence

Background: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is characterized by a bony defect of the superior semicircular canal (SSC), leading to vestibular and auditory symptoms. A process of spontaneous “auto-plugging,” in which the overlying dura mater progressively occludes the SSC, may replicate the effects of surgical canal plugging but remains under-recognized. The present study reports diverse clinical, instrumental, and 3d High Resolution MRI findings in patients with SSCD and subsequently confirmed to present with spontaneous complete or partial auto-plugging. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 11 patients with SSCD diagnosed on high-resolution CT and suspected auto-plugging based on clinical atypia and large dehiscence (>4 mm). Patients underwent comprehensive neurotological assessment, including pure-tone audiometry, vestibular testing, and HR MRI with 3D labyrinthine reconstructions to identify partial or complete auto-plugging. Auto-plugging was classified as partial (Canalis semicircularis superior depressus) or complete (absence of endolymph fluid signal; Canalis semicircularis superior obturatus). Results: Among 13 ears with auto-plugging, 6 were partial and 7 complete. The mean SSCD size in auto-plugged ears was 5.5 mm. Most ears had normal or near-normal vestibular function on VHIT, with minimal air-bone gaps and preserved VEMP responses. Imaging demonstrated varying degrees of dural contact with the SSC, confirming partial or complete canal occlusion. Conclusions: Spontaneous auto-plugging of the SSC is a plausible, under-recognized phenomenon that may reproduce functional effects of surgical plugging. Dedicated 3D labyrinthine MRI enhances detection and characterization. Prospective multimodal studies are needed to clarify the pathophysiology, progression, and clinical implications, optimizing patient selection for surgical versus conservative management. This study examines the role of private investment in promoting multidimensional poverty reduction in a sustainable manner in Vietnam by analyzing both spatial and temporal spillover effects. Provincial panel data for 2010–2024 are employed. To assess the spatial spillover effects, three econometric models are applied: SAR, SEM, and SDM. Diagnostic tests suggest that the SDM model is the most appropriate for the research data. Results based on the contiguity and inverse distance weight matrices show that private investment not only reduces poverty in recipient provinces but also generates benefits for neighboring areas, highlighting the need for coordinated planning of industrial zones and regional economic hubs. To analyze this relationship over both the short-term and long-term horizons, the study employs PMG and CCEP estimators, while the DCCEP model verifies robustness in a dynamic framework. The findings consistently confirm that private investment contributes to multidimensional poverty reduction. An additional result from the DCCEP model indicates that literacy and urbanization rate have significant positive effects on poverty reduction, while these relationships are not detected in other models. This finding carries important implications for building an enabling investment environment to attract and effectively utilize private capital to implement multidimensional poverty reduction strategies towards sustainability and aligned with sustainable development objectives. This paper investigates the capacitance characteristics of a glass-embedded interdigitated capacitive sensor (IDCS) for touch-sensing applications. The study analyzes both baseline (no-touch) and touch-induced capacitance variations through a combination of analytical modeling and experimental validation. A multilayer analytical model is first employed to calculate the baseline capacitance of the proposed structure, followed by experimental measurements for model verification. Subsequently, an equivalent circuit model of the touched state is introduced to represent the interaction between the human fingertip, sensor electrodes, and earth-ground, explaining the observed capacitance reduction during a finger touch. Sensor prototypes with electrode finger widths of 1.4, 2.0, 2.4, and 3.0 mm were fabricated within a 40 × 40 mm2 sensing area. The baseline capacitance decreased from 28.6 pF at 1.4 mm to 12 pF at 3.0 mm electrode finger width, while the capacitance change upon touch ranged from 0.6–0.9 pF. Touch sensitivity for three test persons increased from about 1.7–4.6% at 1.4 mm to 5–7.6% at 3.0 mm electrode finger width. The results confirm that narrower-electrode designs yield higher absolute capacitance, whereas wider electrodes enhance touch sensitivity and provide greater uniformity within the defined sensing area. Overall, the findings validate the proposed IDCS configuration as a practical approach for realizing glass-integrated touch sensors and offer practical guidelines for optimizing electrode geometry in touch-based smart-glass applications. Sex-related differences in lower-limb biomechanics and neuromuscular strategies during rope jumping remain underexplored, particularly in combat-sport athletes. This study investigated leg stiffness and muscle activation in ten female (22.8 ± 0.8 years) and ten male (22.9 ± 1.4 years) Muay Thai athletes. Participants performed rope skipping under three conditions: dominant leg, non-dominant leg, and double leg at 2.2 Hz. Ground reaction forces were recorded at 1000 Hz, center of mass displacement at 200 Hz, and electromyographic activity of the vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and medial gastrocnemius at 3000 Hz. Vertical stiffness (Kvert) was calculated as the ratio of peak vertical force to displacement. Results showed no significant sex differences in peak ground reaction force (e.g., dominant leg: females 2.83 ± 0.42 vs. males 3.22 ± 0.57 kN; double leg: females 4.04 ± 0.83 vs. males 4.35 ± 0.73 kN; p > 0.05), vertical stiffness (females 17.02 ± 3.66 vs. males 16.21 ± 4.09 kN/m; p > 0.05), contact time (females 0.280 ± 0.03 vs. males 0.275 ± 0.05 s; p > 0.05), or flight time (females 0.205 ± 0.03 vs. males 0.245 ± 0.05 s; p > 0.05). In contrast, females exhibited significantly higher co-activation ratios during unilateral skipping, including BF/VL (0.76 ± 0.18 vs. 0.63 ± 0.10; p < 0.05) and TA/MG (0.38 ± 0.11 vs. 0.29 ± 0.07; p < 0.05), suggesting a neuromuscular strategy to enhance joint stability. These findings highlight rope jumping as a practical drill that can promote neuromuscular control and stability in Muay Thai training. Full article

Background/Objectives: The external validity of sarcopenia screening questionnaires in the elderly has been examined in several conditions but rarely evaluated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study aimed to determine the performance of five Thai versions of sarcopenia screening questionnaires (SARC-F [Strength, Assistance with walking, Rising from a chair, Climbing stairs, and Falls], SARC-CalF [SARC-F plus calf circumference], MSRA [Mini Sarcopenia Risk Assessment]-7, MSRA-5, and modified MSRA-5 questionnaires) in Thai RA patients, and evaluate the correlations among these instruments. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, consecutive adult RA patients (aged ≥20 years) from an outpatient rheumatology clinic completed the five sarcopenia screening questionnaires listed above. Sarcopenia was defined according to criteria of the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). Appendicular skeletal muscle mass, grip strength, and physical performance were assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis, a hand dynamometer, and a 6 m gait speed test, respectively. The cut-off values used for each sarcopenia screening questionnaire were pre-specified according to their respective established thresholds. Results: Of 299 RA patients (89.0% female, mean age of 61.3 ± 11.6 years, median [interquartile range] disease duration of 12.8 [8.2, 20.0] years), 37.5% and 27.4% of them had sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia, respectively. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for the SARC-F, SARC-CalF, MSRA-7, MSRA-5, and modified MSRA-5 questionnaires were 0.60, 0.74, 0.65, 0.62, and 0.65, respectively, with sensitivities of 34.8%, 73.2%, 77.7%, 68.8%, and 72.3% and specificities of 84.5%, 75.4%, 51.3%, 55.1%, and 58.3%, respectively. SARC-F demonstrated moderate correlations with the other questionnaires: SARC-CalF (r = 0.57), MSRA-7 (r = −0.52), MSRA-5 (r = −0.55), and modified MSRA-5 (r = −0.65), all with a p-value of <0.001. Conclusions: Sarcopenia is common among Thai RA patients. SARC-CalF had the best balance of sensitivity and specificity and is likely the most suitable sarcopenia screening questionnaire for Thai RA patients. Full article

Less Severe Inflammation in Cyclic GMP–AMP Synthase (cGAS)-Deficient Mice with Rabies, Impact of Mitochondrial Injury, and Gut–Brain Axis

Activation of cGAS, a receptor recognizing cytosolic DNA, in macrophages might be associated with rabies (an RNA virus) through mitochondrial damage. A similar mortality rate was observed between cGAS-deficient (cGAS-/-) and wild-type (WT) mice post-CVS-11 strain injection. However, 2 out of 12 cGAS-/- mice (but not WT) survived for 15 days post-injection. At 7 days post-infection, less severe brain inflammation in cGAS-/- mice was demonstrated by the viral abundance in the hippocampus, the expression of proinflammatory genes (TNF-α and IL-1β), and the Evans blue dye assay (blood–brain barrier defect) with the presence of higher anti-inflammatory genes (TGF-β and arginase-1). Fecal Proteobacteria was more prominent in the infected WT mice, while serum cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) were similar in both mouse strains. There were less prominent responses against the rabies virus in cGAS-/- macrophages than in WT cells, as indicated by supernatant IL-6 and the gene expression of TLR-3, RIG-1, MDA-5, and iNOS. On the other hand, mitochondrial injury and cGAS activation were more prominent in WT macrophages over cGAS-/- cells, as indicated by cGAS expression, supernatant cGAMP (a secondary messenger of cGAS), and mitochondrial oxidative stress (MitoSox) together with a decrease in mitochondrial DNA and maximal respiration (extracellular flux analysis). In conclusion, (i) rabies-damaged mitochondria led to cGAS activation that was less severe in cGAS-/- than in WT, (ii) rabies-induced dysbiosis was demonstrated, and (iii) cGAS manipulation and gut–brain axis-associated inflammation warrants further investigation. Understanding genotype × environment (G × E) interaction is essential for the improvement of aromatic crops such as basil (Ocimum basilicum), where yield is strongly influenced by environmental variability. In this study, five basil varieties (Burns Lemon, Cinnamon, Sweet, Red Rubin, and Thai) were evaluated across two years (2015–2016, 2016–2017) and three irrigation levels (40%, 70%, and 100% of the full water requirement) to assess dry biomass yield. ANOVA and mean performance plots confirmed significant varietal differences (F = 33.972, p < 0.001) and substantial Y × V interaction (F = 23.578, p < 0.001), motivating a deeper exploration of association patterns. To this end, we proposed the use of a modified version of Simple Correspondence Analysis (CA) combined with three variations of bi-plot analyses in order to explore the (G × E) interaction. In addition, another modification of CA is proposed and used, CA of raw data (CA-raw), for the same reason. For the purpose of the study, the combinations of the two cultivation periods (years) by the three irrigation levels were considered as six environments. Results showed that the proposed modification of CA of raw data serves as a faithful baseline for the study of (G × E) interaction. On the other hand, the proposed modified version of simple CA, after proper normalization (row, column, symmetrical, principal) of the factorial scores of the five basil varieties and the six environments, provide insights depending on whether the research focus lies on varieties, environments, or their joint associations (interaction). Overall, the combined use of ANOVA, mean plots, and CA under multiple normalizations and modifications demonstrated the robustness of the primary varietal–environment contrast, while also showing how methodological choices shape interpretation. The proposed methods are “model free” and can be used also with secondary published data. Full article

In an era where digital ecosystems transcend national boundaries, TikTok has emerged as a globally influential platform, reshaping international marketing strategies. This study examines the factors influencing Thai consumers’ purchase intention on TikTok using the Stimulus–Organism–Response framework. Specifically, it explores how advertisement characteristics (interactivity, entertainment, informativeness) and customer brand engagement shape consumer perceptions of value and trust, which drive purchase intention. Data were collected from 400 Thai TikTok users and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings reveal that interactivity, informativeness, and brand engagement significantly affect perceived value, while brand engagement does not significantly influence brand trust. Moreover, perceived value contributes positively to trust, and brand trust significantly influences purchase intention. Notably, entertainment did not significantly influence perceived value, whereas brand engagement showed a meaningful positive effect. Additionally, customer brand engagement did not affect trust significantly in this context. This study focuses on a high-engagement digital platform within an emerging market and, thus, provides fresh insights into how digital advertising stimuli operate within international marketing ecosystems. The theoretical and managerial implications are discussed for global marketers aiming to optimize content strategies on dynamic platforms such as TikTok. Full article

Salinity is one of the primary limiting factors in the rice production system in northeast Thailand due to the presence of underground salt rocks, and the situation is expected to deteriorate further in the future since rice is particularly susceptible to salinity. In this study, 382 indigenous lowland rice germplasms were evaluated for salt tolerance under hydroponic conditions at the seedling stage. The stress condition was induced by adding NaCl from 2 dS/m to 22 dS/m. Twenty-two varieties (group 1) were selected based on low leaf salinity scores in 2019 and 2020. Ten varieties, LLR050, LLR054, LLR106, LLR216, LLR309, LLR365, LLR377, LLR402, LLR441, and LLR449, were selected from leaf salt injury scores under hydroponic conditions in 2021 and 2022. The response of ten selected varieties was investigated under both hydroponic and soil media at the seedling stage, as well as soil culture at the tillering and flowering stages. The results revealed that LLR054, LLR365, and LLR216 exhibited low leaf injury scores (less than 4.0) at both the seedling and tillering stages. At the seedling stage, most varieties demonstrated high Na+ accumulation in the root, while high accumulation in the shoot was observed at the tillering stage. Varieties LLR054 and LLR441 displayed low leaf damage scores, root sodium accumulation at the seedling stage, and shoot sodium accumulation at the tillering stage, similar to the tolerant check variety Pokkali. Additionally, LLR365 and LLR216 showed high shoot sodium accumulation but low leaf damage scores at the tillering stage. At the flowering stage, LLR050 and LLR449 maintained high yields and filled seeds per panicle under salt stress. Therefore, early-stage LLR054, LLR441, LLR365, and LLR216 had high tolerance and LLR050 and LLR449 maintained high yields, and these varieties are potential sources of salt tolerance for future rice breeding programs. Thailand’s mango export industry faces significant challenges in meeting stringent international quality standards, particularly the costly phytosanitary X-ray irradiation process. Current fixed-dose irradiation methods result in substantial energy waste due to variations in fruit size. This research presents a low-cost, real-time system that integrates computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize this process. By capturing a single top-view 2D image, the system accurately estimates the three-dimensional characteristics (width, height, and depth) of ‘Nam Dok Mai Si Thong’ mangoes. This dimensional data is crucial for dynamically adjusting the radiation dose for each fruit, leading to significant reductions in energy consumption and operational costs. Our novel approach utilizes a Linear Regression combined with Co-Kriging (LR + CoK) model to precisely estimate fruit depth from 2D data, a key limitation in previous studies. The system demonstrated high efficacy, achieving a dimensional estimation error (RMSE) of less than 0.46 cm and a size grading accuracy of up to 93.33 percent. This technology not only enhances sorting and grading efficiency but also offers a practical solution to lower the economic and energy burden of phytosanitary treatments, directly improving the sustainability of fruit export operations. As the Buddhist monastic community in Korea has entered an era marked by aging demographics, the issues surrounding the welfare of the order’s monastics in their retirement years have become increasingly pressing. In response, in 2011, the Jogye Order enacted the Monastic Welfare Act and established the Monastic Welfare Society with the aim of enabling monks to fully devote themselves to their religious duties by assuming institutional responsibility for their healthcare, pension, residential welfare, and end-of-life needs. Over a decade since the system’s implementation, the Jogye Order has achieved notable progress towards achieving the Monastic Welfare Act’s aims. However, while the order has stabilized medical coverage for its clergy, there remain considerable gaps in its provisions for income and housing for elderly monastics. This article surveys the Jogye Order’s efforts to establish systemic care for its elderly monastics, with a particular focus on the Jogye Order’s 2011 Monastic Welfare Act and subsequent activities of the Monastic Welfare Society. It then critically examines the current state of eldercare within the order, along with its strengths and weakness, before engaging in a comparative discussion regarding the clerical eldercare and welfare systems provided by both the Korean Catholic Church and the Thai Buddhist community. The cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale L.) is rich in antioxidant bioactive constituents that have anti-aging and wound healing properties. The objective of this study is to evaluate the biological activities of cashew apple extract (CAE) and to improve the issue involving the instability of ascorbic acid, the principal active compound, by encapsulating the extract in liposomes in order to enhance its stability and skin permeation for cosmetic applications. CAE was obtained from fresh cashew apple via ethanol maceration, solvent evaporation, and freeze-drying. Ascorbic acid content, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and total caffeoylquinic acid content (TCQAC) were determined. The ascorbic acid content and its tautomer in the extract were quantified using the LC-MS/MS method. Biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-tyrosinase, fibroblast collagen synthesis, cytoprotection against oxidative stress, wound healing, and cytotoxicity, were assessed. CAE was encapsulated in liposomes to enhance the stability of its inherent ascorbic acid and improve its skin in comparison to free-CAE. The CAE and liposomal-CAE were incorporated and formulated into a solution, and their physicochemical stability was assessed after storage. CAE appeared as a brown, viscous liquid with a characteristic sweet, fruity scent. Each gram of CAE contained 0.90 ± 0.05 mg of ascorbic acid, TPC, 81.40 ± 7.14 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE), TFC, 3.73 ± 0.30 mg of rutin equivalents (RE), and TCQAC, 4.48 ± 0.05 mg of chlorogenic acid equivalents (CGAE). CAE exhibited antioxidant properties (IC50 = 282.19 ± 11.16 and 963.66 ± 3.95 µg/mL for DPPH and ABTS assay, respectively) and weak anti-tyrosinase activity (IC50 = 4213.77 ± 138.97 µg/mL). It was non-cytotoxic to fibroblast and monocyte cells at a concentration of less than 1 mg/mL. In vitro wound healing assays demonstrated that CAE stimulated collagen production in a dose-dependent manner at CAE concentrations above 250 µg/mL. Additionally, CAE exhibited cytoprotective effects against H2O2-induced oxidative stress and did not induce inflammatory responses in immune cells. The liposomal formulation containing CAE achieved high encapsulation efficiency (79.75–84.55%) based on ascorbic acid content. In skin permeation studies, CAE-loaded liposomes demonstrated an enhancement ratio approximately two-fold greater than that of free-CAE. Stability testing over 3 months showed that the ascorbic acid content in CAE-loaded liposomes remained significantly higher than that in the free-CAE under both refrigerated and long-term conditions (30 °C/75% RH). CAE demonstrated potential anti-aging properties for improving aging skin. Liposomal incorporation markedly improved ascorbic acid stability and skin permeability. Full article

The First Dark-Sky Map of Thailand: International Comparisons and Factors Affecting the Rate of Change

We present the first dark-sky map of Thailand, derived from calibrated Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite data spanning 2012–2023. Artificial night-sky brightness was classified into 14 levels, with Classes 1–9 defined as potential dark-sky areas where the Milky Way remains visible. International comparisons with the United Kingdom, Chile, and Botswana reveal that Thailand has undergone the steepest decline, losing 15.4% of pristine skies since 2012, while the UK remained stable (+0.8%), Botswana nearly unchanged (−0.7%), and Chile moderately degraded (−5.3%). A correlation analysis shows strong negative associations between potential dark-sky area and both GDP (r=0.65) and population (r=0.68), while inflation (r=0.26) and unemployment (r=0.24) exhibit weak influence. Five algorithms, including GLM and machine learning models, were tested; among them, the Decision Tree achieved the lowest relative error (0.4%±0.3%), with ensemble methods and GLM performing comparably and Deep Learning being less accurate. By 2023, over 60% of Thais lived under skies too bright to observe the Milky Way by naked eye, and one-fifth were exposed to intensities preventing dark adaptation. Thailand’s rapid transition to LED street lighting after 2015, while energy-efficient, has intensified skyglow. Protecting remaining dark-sky areas requires urgent policies, linking conservation to human health, biodiversity, cultural heritage, and sustainable development. Full article

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant with no nutritional value or physiological role in the body. It readily accumulates in various tissues as it is easily absorbed from the diet but only poorly excreted. Due to the widespread contamination of staple foods, exposure to this toxic metal is inevitable for most people. The health risk due to dietary Cd exposure has long been underappreciated. This is primarily due to the use of urinary excretion of β2-microglobulin (β2M) as an indicator of an adverse health effect. This study employed advanced benchmark dose (BMD) modeling in a Thai cohort (n = 799) to reassess health risks from dietary Cd exposure. The BMD limit for urinary Cd was identified as 0.17 μg/g creatinine when using a reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) as the endpoint, whereas no reliable BMD could be established using β2-microglobulin excretion. Given that eGFR reduction is a more reliable indicator of chronic kidney disease, its use is recommended for deriving health-protective guidelines. The findings demonstrate that the current urinary Cd threshold of 5.24 μg/g creatinine is inadequate, supporting the adoption of a threshold below 0.20 μg/g creatinine in future exposure guidelines. Gluten-Free Rice Malt Extract Powder: Pilot-Scale Production, Characterization, and Food Applications

Background/Objectives: This study reports pilot-scale production of gluten-free rice malt extract powder from Thai Chainat 1 rice as a sustainable alternative to barley malt extract. Methods: The process combined controlled malting with sequential enzymatic hydrolysis, optimized through bench-scale validation and scaled up to a 1500 L pilot system. Results: The resulting powder was rich in fermentable sugars (maltose 43.9 g/100 g, glucose 14.3 g/100 g), protein (5.2 g/100 g), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA, 245.2 mg/100 g), and thiamine (0.64 mg/100 g), while free of detectable gluten, aflatoxins, and heavy metals. Microbiological quality met international safety standards. Shelf-life studies under ambient and accelerated conditions demonstrated chemical stability and bioactive retention for up to three years in laminated and HDPE packaging. Application trials confirmed that the rice malt extract powder supported yeast, bacterial, and mold growth comparably to commercial malt extract in culture media, with optimized yeast–mold agar formulations enabling direct substitution without supplementary glucose. The powder was further applied to a gluten-free malt beverage, yielding a beer-like product with acceptable physicochemical and nutritional quality, though residual alcohol levels exceeded the non-alcoholic threshold and required process optimization. Conclusions: Rice malt extract powder represents a safe, functional ingredient suitable for food, beverage, and industrial microbiology applications, offering opportunities to reduce import dependency and advance gluten-free innovation in emerging markets.
