The rapid popularization of digital technology is profoundly altering the employment landscape; especially in rural areas, the digital economy has opened up unprecedented channels to narrow the gender gap in non-agricultural employment. This study utilizes data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) from 2014 to 2020, employing a two-way fixed effects model to systematically examine the impact of digital literacy on the non-agricultural employment transition of rural women. The findings demonstrate that integrating social learning theory with digital empowerment theory establishes a dual-pathway analytical framework for examining psychological capital and information environments. Through skill development and resource optimization, digital literacy significantly enhances rural women’s employment participation and occupational re-adaptability, with these effects varying across regions and generations. Furthermore, the study reveals how household economic resources and regional development levels exert differential influences on these outcomes by affecting the acquisition and application of digital skills. These findings expand theoretical understanding of non-agricultural employment mechanisms in the digital era and offer practical policy insights. They also provide evidence-based strategies for enhancing women’s employment quality, advancing gender equality, and promoting rural revitalization, offering valuable guidance for developing countries navigating employment challenges through digital transformation. The use of digital technologies can break down information barriers in rural areas, thereby creating crucial conditions for the widespread adoption of green agricultural technologies (GATs) among farmers. To explore the relationship between digital technology use (DTU) and farmers’ adoption of GATs, this study draws on 18 in-depth interviews and 608 survey responses collected from rice farmers in Sichuan Province, China. By adopting a mixed-methods design, it offers a comprehensive examination of the mechanisms through which digital technology use (DTU) promotes the adoption of green agricultural technologies (GATs) among farmers. Grounded theory analysis reveals that the DTU–GATs adoption pathway can be conceptualized within a “condition–process–outcome” framework. Specifically, digital infrastructure, farmers’ capital endowment, and practical needs constitute the foundational conditions, while technology perception and the regional soft environment act as key mediating processes. The ultimate outcomes include improvements in economic performance, social well-being, and ecological sustainability. Empirical evidence confirms that DTU significantly promotes the adoption of GATs, primarily by enhancing farmers’ perceptions of technology and improving the agricultural soft environment at the regional level. Moreover, the effects of DTU display substantial heterogeneity across different types of green technologies and among various farmer groups. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening digital infrastructure in rural areas, enhancing farmers’ digital literacy and capacity, and leveraging digital tools to tailor the dissemination and guidance of GATs. Such efforts are essential to raise farmers’ awareness, foster a supportive soft environment for sustainable agriculture, and ultimately advance the adoption of GATs. Full article

This study aims to examine the implementation of digital education at SDN Cicurug Caringin and SDIT Nabawi, Sukabumi Regency, with a focus on opportunities, challenges, and gaps in the use of technology for learning at the elementary school level. Using a qualitative approach and a comparative case study design, this study explores the application of digital education in two different contexts, namely in rural areas (SDN Cicurug Caringin) and urban areas (SDIT Nabawi). Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four teachers, two principals, eight students, and four parents, as well as direct observation in both schools. The analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis procedures. The results of the study show that SDN Cicurug Caringin faces significant infrastructure constraints, such as a student-computer ratio of 1:15, limited internet connection, and low digital literacy of parents due to their simple socio-economic background. On the other hand, SDIT Nabawi has succeeded in utilizing digital platforms such as Let’s Read to increase students’ interest in reading, although it is limited by teaching time and lack of TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) training for teachers. The main gaps found between the two schools are unequal access to technology, limited teacher capacity to integrate technology, and low parental support in assisting children in digital learning. This study provides empirical evidence that the success of digital education is highly dependent on adequate infrastructure, TPACK-based training for teachers, and parental involvement in digital literacy. The recommendations included infrastructure improvements, TPACK training for teachers, and the implementation of digital literacy workshops for parents to reduce disparities and improve learning outcomes. Background/Objectives: As healthcare increasingly utilizes digital delivery systems, equitable access and engagement are critical, particularly for caregivers of older adults in rural regions. This study examines how education levels and geographic rurality influence health information-seeking in Mississippi, a state with persistent structural inequities, through the theoretical lenses of Digital Divide Theory and Theory of Planned Behavior. Methods: A statewide survey was conducted among caregivers in Mississippi (N = 452) who support adults aged 50+. The survey assessed rurality level, educational attainment, attitudes toward various health information sources, perceived digital accessibility, and reported challenges in obtaining necessary health guidance. Results: Findings challenged conventional assumptions regarding rural digital engagement. Rural caregivers reported higher trust in both internet and interpersonal health information sources. Rurality did not significantly predict internet use or reported difficulty finding information. However, a significant interaction between education and rurality revealed an “Outcome Divide”: while higher education correlated with more positive attitudes toward online health information in urban areas, this association weakened and reversed in highly rural contexts. Conclusions: These results underscore the need for strategies beyond merely improving access to bridge digital health equity gaps. Policy and interventions must address contextual barriers, such as digital health literacy and relevance, limiting the effectiveness of digital tools, even when internet access is available. Promoting digital health literacy, integrating trusted local interpersonal networks, and adapting educational initiatives to rural realities are essential for advancing equitable and effective digital health engagement. China’s urbanization has witnessed a significant influx of people pursuing better economic prospects. However, as digitization becomes increasingly integrated into urban living, it raises the bar for migrants’ digital literacy, and creates adaptation challenges for rural migrants. Despite a few pieces of literature having analyzed how micro-level economic and social characteristics of rural migrants affect their urban living quality in inflow areas, few studies have examined the influencing factors of migrants’ urban living quality from the perspective of digitization level of the inflow areas, which is a nonnegligible environmental factors in modern China. Based on the data of China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS), this paper empirically examines how urban financial digitization in inflows affects rural migrants’ urban living quality. The impact of financial digitalization on urban living quality of rural migrants presents a significantly positive “U” shape. That is, with the improvement of financial digitalization, rural migrants’ urban living quality in inflow areas would first decline and then increase. The mechanism study shows that the financial digitization affects rural migrants’ living quality through urban settlement intention as intermediary variable. Furthermore, heterogeneity across education attainment, migration scope and duration were investigated. The results of the study provide empirical evidence on how to make rural migrants obtain better life experience with the development of urban digitization. Full article

Background: Telepsychiatry expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet patient experience data from mixed urban and rural areas in Saudi Arabia remain scarce. Objective: We aimed to quantify the perception of telepsychiatry among adults with major depressive disorder [MDD] in Madinah City, the KSA, and to identify associated demographic and clinical factors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at Madinah Mental Health Hospital between December 2024 and March 2025. Eligible participants were Arabic-speaking adults [≥18 years] with a clinician-confirmed diagnosis of major depressive disorder [MDD] according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition [DSM-5], following a scheduled video- or audio-based telepsychiatry consultation. Perception of telepsychiatry was assessed using the validated 10-item Arabic version of the Telehealth Satisfaction Scale [TeSS], which evaluates audiovisual quality, communication, and support. Variables associated with perception at p < 0.20 in the bivariable analyses were entered into a multiple linear regression model to identify independent predictors. Results: Of the 218 eligible patients, 207 participated [response rate = 95%], with similarly high participation rates being reported in comparable telepsychiatry surveys [e.g., 90–91%]. The majority were male [59%], with a mean [SD] age of 38.4 [11.2] years. The mean satisfaction score was 32.3 ± 6.3, and 36% of participants were classified as highly satisfied. In the multivariable analysis, higher satisfaction was independently associated with male gender [B = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.3–4.7], intermediate versus elementary education [B = 4.3, 95% CI: 1.1–7.6], and the presence of a chronic illness [B = 2.1, 95% CI: 0.3–3.8]. Conclusions: Telepsychiatry is generally well-accepted among adults with depression in Madinah. However, women and individuals with lower educational attainment report lower satisfaction. Targeted interventions such as improving privacy, offering digital literacy support, and tailoring communication may help improve the telepsychiatry experience for underserved groups. Full article

Objectives: The adoption of telemedicine, which is the delivery of healthcare services through digital platforms, exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic as a means to ensure the continuity of care while minimizing infection risks. While this modality improved access and convenience for many, disparities in adoption have emerged, particularly in rural and underserved populations. This study aims to evaluate the impact of telemedicine on patient satisfaction before and during the pandemic, with a focus on chronic disease management—notably hypertension—and to identify factors influencing the equitable adoption of telehealth. Methods and Procedures: This study used a mixed method approach, combining quantitative survey data and causal loop modeling to analyze patient satisfaction levels and the interplay between telehealth adoption, healthcare access, and demographic disparities. Patient-reported satisfaction data were collected in two time periods—before and during the pandemic. Causal modeling was used to explore systemic relationships between provider support, technology access, patient engagement, and health equity. Results: The findings revealed that telemedicine significantly enhanced healthcare access during the pandemic, with a notable increase in patient satisfaction scores. Patients with chronic conditions, especially those diagnosed with hypertension, reported the improved continuity of care and reduced geographic barriers. However, disparities in telehealth access were more pronounced in non-metropolitan areas and among older adults and minority populations. Causal analysis highlighted key enablers of telehealth success, i.e., provider support, digital literacy, and access to reliable internet and devices. Conclusions: Telemedicine presents a transformative solution for equitable healthcare delivery, especially in chronic disease management. Strategic efforts are needed to address adoption disparities and ensure the sustained and inclusive integration of telehealth after the pandemic. Full article

The vulnerability of older adults in rural mountainous regions presents a critical challenge for sustainable development, particularly in the context of smart city and digital town construction. In this study, we develop a comprehensive analytical framework and evaluation index to assess Vulnerability to Elderly Poverty (VEP) and adaptive capacity, with a focus on its integration with smart infrastructure and age-friendly rural built environment strategies. Using Shizhu County in Chongqing, China, as a case study, we explore spatial disparities in VEP and apply quantile regression to identify the driving factors of adaptability. Our findings indicate that subsidy-dependent, middle-aged, and empty-nest older adults are the most vulnerable groups, with limited capacity to adapt to changing environments. A geographically alternating “high–low–high–low” VEP pattern reflects uneven development in infrastructure, accessibility, and public service construction. These disparities highlight the need for targeted planning and building interventions in rural settings. The key factors influencing adaptability include individual attributes, intergenerational support, and macro-level conditions such as policy design and digital infrastructure deployment. The integration of aging-friendly building strategies, smart infrastructure, and digital tools significantly enhances older adults’ resilience and social inclusion. Based on our results, we propose four adaptation models for aging populations in rural areas, emphasizing the construction of inclusive digital infrastructure, aging-sensitive building design, and community-based support systems. Strategic recommendations include promoting digital literacy through built environment interventions, enhancing intergenerational living arrangements, and embedding elderly-responsive features into smart construction planning. This research offers new insights into construction management practices that support aging in place and poverty alleviation through inclusive and resilient built environments. Full article

Enhancing farmers’ digital literacy is both an inevitable requirement for adapting to the digital age and an important measure for promoting the sustainable development of livestock and poultry manure resource utilization. This study surveyed and obtained data from 1047 farm households in Ningxia and Gansu, two provinces in China that have long implemented livestock manure resource utilization policies, from December 2023 to January 2024, and employed the binary probit model to analyze how digital literacy influences farmers’ willingness to adopt two livestock manure resource utilization modes, as well as to analyze the moderating role of three policy regulations. This paper also explores the heterogeneous results in different village forms and income groups. The results are as follows: (1) Digital literacy significantly and positively impacts farmers’ willingness to adopt both the “household collection” mode and the “livestock community” mode. For every one-unit increase in a farmer’s digital literacy, the probability of farmers’ willingness to adopt the “household collection” mode rises by 22 percentage points, and the probability of farmers’ willingness to adopt the “livestock community” mode rises by 19.8 percentage points. After endogeneity tests and robustness checks, the conclusion still holds. (2) Mechanism analysis results indicate that guiding policy and incentive policy have a positive moderation effect on the link between digital literacy and the willingness to adopt the “household collection” mode. Meanwhile, incentive policy also positively moderates the relationship between digital literacy and the willingness to adopt the “livestock community” mode. (3) Heterogeneity analysis results show that the positive effect of digital literacy on farmers’ willingness to adopt two livestock manure resource utilization modes is stronger in “tight-knit society” rural areas and in low-income households. (4) In further discussion, we find that digital literacy removes the information barriers for farmers, facilitating the conversion of willingness into behavior. The value of this study is as follows: this paper provides new insights for the promotion of livestock and poultry manure resource utilization policies in countries and regions similar to the development process of northwest China. Therefore, enhancing farmers’ digital literacy in a targeted way, strengthening the promotion of grassroots policies on livestock manure resource utilization, formulating diversified ecological compensation schemes, and establishing limited supervision and penalty rules can boost farmers’ willingness to adopt manure resource utilization models. The construction and development of digital infrastructure have emerged as a crucial indicator of national competitiveness, which holds significant importance in driving the sustained growth of the national economy and the comprehensive advancement of society. This paper explores the impact of digital infrastructure on farm households’ scale management, aiming to reveal the role and potential of digital technology in agricultural modernization. Additionally, it seeks to offer a scientific foundation for the government to formulate agricultural policies and advance agricultural modernization. Using the OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) model, moderating effect model, and other methods, this study investigates how digital infrastructure affects farm households’ scale management based on micro-level research data of 2510 farm households from the CRRS (China Rural Revitalization Survey). The following conclusions are drawn: Firstly, the enhancement of digital infrastructure can motivate farm households to expand the land management area and increase the unit output of land. Secondly, farm households’ digital literacy positively moderates the effect of digital infrastructure on their land unit output; moreover, digital skills training for farm households exhibits a positive moderating effect on the influence of digital infrastructure on their management area. Finally, there is a heterogeneity in the impact of digital infrastructure on farm households’ scale management. Specifically, the promotion of farm households’ scale management is stronger in plain areas and weaker in hilly and mountainous areas; stronger for middle-aged and older and small-scale farm households; and weaker for youth groups and large-scale farm households. Based on this, this paper suggests increasing the investment in digital infrastructure construction, improving farm households’ digital literacy, carrying out digital skills training, and formulating differentiated regional policies for reference. Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) offers opportunities to enhance healthcare accessibility for people with disabilities (PwDs). However, their application in Saudi Arabia remains limited. This study explores PwDs’ experiences with AI technologies within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 digital health framework to inform inclusive healthcare innovation strategies. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine PwDs across Riyadh, Al-Jouf, and the Northern Border region between January and February 2025. Participants used various AI-enabled technologies, including smart home assistants, mobile health applications, communication aids, and automated scheduling systems. Thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework was employed to identify key themes and patterns. Results: Four major themes emerged: (1) accessibility and usability challenges, including voice recognition difficulties and interface barriers; (2) personalization and autonomy through AI-assisted daily living tasks and medication management; (3) technological barriers such as connectivity issues and maintenance gaps; and (4) psychological acceptance influenced by family support and cultural integration. Participants noted infrastructure gaps in rural areas, financial constraints, limited disability-specific design, and digital literacy barriers while expressing optimism regarding AI’s potential to enhance independence and health outcomes. Conclusions: Realizing the benefits of AI for disability healthcare in Saudi Arabia requires culturally adapted designs, improved infrastructure investment in rural regions, inclusive policymaking, and targeted digital literacy programs. These findings support inclusive healthcare innovation aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 goals and provide evidence-based recommendations for implementing AI healthcare technologies for PwDs in similar cultural contexts. Blockchain technology is being increasingly deployed to store and process transactions and information in the global financial sector. Blockchain underpins cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and facilitates decentralized finance (DeFi), representing a paradigm shift in the global financial landscape, offering alternative solutions to traditional banking, and fostering financial inclusion. In developing economies such as Morocco, where a significant portion of the population remains unbanked, these digital financial innovations present both opportunities and challenges. This study examines the potential role of cryptocurrencies and DeFi in enhancing financial inclusion in Morocco, where cryptocurrencies have been banned since 2017. However, the public continues to use cryptocurrencies, circumventing restrictions, and the Moroccan Central Bank is now preparing to introduce new regulations to legalize their use within the country. In this context, this article analyses the potential of cryptocurrencies to mitigate barriers such as high transaction costs, restricted access to financial services in rural areas, and limited financial literacy in the country. The study pursues a mixed-methods approach, which combines a quantitative survey with qualitative expert interviews and adapts the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model to the Moroccan context. The findings reveal that while cryptocurrencies offer cost-efficient financial transactions and improved accessibility, their adoption may be constrained by regulatory uncertainty, security risks, and technological limitations. The novelty of the article thus lies in its focus on the key mechanisms that influence the adoption of cryptocurrencies and their potential impact in a specific national context. In so doing, the study highlights the need for a structured regulatory framework, investment in digital infrastructure, and targeted financial literacy initiatives to optimize the potential role of cryptocurrencies in progressing financial inclusion in Morocco. This underscores the need for integrated models and guidelines for policymakers, financial institutions, and technology providers to ensure the responsible introduction of cryptocurrencies in developing world environments. Digital Literacy and Food Consumption Structure: Evidence from Rural China

Background/Objectives: Healthy diets and proper nutrition are fundamental for human survival. With economic development and rising incomes, the food consumption structure of rural residents in China has noticeably changed. However, substantial disparities still exist in the quality of food consumption between urban and rural areas, and the dietary structure of rural populations remains imbalanced. Methods: This study uses 2020 China Rural Revitalization Survey (CRRS) samples of rural residents for analysis since it asked residents questions about their digital literacy and food consumption. A total of 2827 valid rural resident samples were finally obtained, and the participants had a mean age of 54.844 years. This study employs the ordinary least squares (OLS) model and the two-stage least squares (2SLS) method to examine the impact of digital literacy on the food consumption structure of rural households and its underlying mechanisms. Results: Based on the regression analyses, digital literacy significantly improves the food consumption structure of rural residents (p < 0.05). Heterogeneity analysis shows that at the regional level, digital literacy has a stronger impact on the food consumption structure of rural residents in southern China (β = −153.255, p < 0.05); at the individual level, its impact is more pronounced among rural residents with lower educational attainment (β = −427.506, p < 0.01) and among middle-aged and elderly populations (β = −212.705, p < 0.05). The mechanism analysis reveals that digital literacy can enhance the food consumption structure of rural residents by increasing their awareness of dietary health and food safety. Conclusions: These findings highlight the necessity of integrating the optimization of food consumption structures with enhancements in digital literacy into policy-making and provides valuable insights for developing policies aimed at improving the nutritional health of rural residents. Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, significantly impacting individuals with chronic conditions who depend on continuous medical care. In Romania, the pandemic revealed systemic vulnerabilities, particularly in ensuring access to services for older adults and rural populations. This study aimed to assess perceived barriers to healthcare access and service quality among Romanian patients with chronic diseases and a confirmed history of COVID-19, within the framework of the country’s multi-tiered healthcare system. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2025, involving 16 adult participants diagnosed with at least one chronic illness. Data were collected using a 30-item questionnaire administered by the principal investigator after obtaining informed consent. The instrument explored access to services, challenges related to remote consultations, and satisfaction with nursing care. Descriptive and comparative analyses were carried out based on age group and area of residence. Due to the small sample size, the results are considered exploratory and context-specific. Results: Most participants reported disrupted access to healthcare services, especially within public sector facilities. Rural residents experienced longer delays in receiving care than those in urban areas. Digital health tools were perceived as barriers by 75% of respondents aged 60 and above, while younger participants adapted more easily. Overall satisfaction with nursing care was moderate to high (mean score: 3.56/5), with the highest ratings observed among patients aged 30–60 years. Conclusions: This study highlights significant barriers to healthcare access among Romanian patients with chronic illnesses and a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis during the pandemic. The key challenges included digital exclusion and rural–urban disparities. The findings underscore the need for targeted strategies to enhance digital health literacy, adapt care delivery models, and strengthen healthcare system resilience in future public health emergencies. This study examined the impact of media multitasking on the reading habits and practices of 700 Moroccan English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers, utilizing a time-diary survey methodology. The findings reveal that a significant number of teachers engage in media multitasking, particularly watching television and using the Internet, while reading for both academic and recreational purposes. Ordinal logistic regression (OR) analyses showed that school type and specific multitasking activities were significant predictors of the displacement of time spent on reading. Teachers in urban/suburban schools reported higher levels of displacement compared with those in rural areas (OR = 2.23; 95% CI [1.59, 3.14]), while more-experienced teachers (6–10 years) reported less displacement (OR = 0.56; 95% CI [0.39, 0.80]). Watching television “most of the time” while reading was associated with greater displacement for both recreational (OR = 2.61; 95% CI [1.18, 5.79]) and academic reading (OR = 2.64; 95% CI [1.16, 6.06]). Social network showed contrasting associations: significantly lower displacement for recreational reading, but no significant relationship with academic reading displacement. These results suggest that media multitasking has context-dependent effects on teachers’ reading practices, with implications for their professional development and literacy instruction. This study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to help teachers manage digital distractions and foster focused reading habits in the digital age. Future research should explore the long-term consequences of media multitasking on teachers’ effectiveness and identify strategies to promote engaged reading across diverse educational settings.
