The electrification of vehicle chassis systems is increasingly important due to benefits such as vehicle lightweighting, enhanced safety, and design flexibility. However, faults in these systems can seriously compromise safety, making Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) essential. This study investigated FTC of four-wheel independent Electro-Mechanical Brake (EMB) actuators and proposed a method to prevent lane departure under actuator faults. Fault Tolerant Robust Control (FTRC) of four-wheel independent EMB actuators using Time Delay Control (TDC) was applied without Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) to maintain real-time capability, and without steering control to reduce system complexity. In addition, for actuator faults causing large lateral displacements, a control strategy applying relative weighting to lateral velocity and yaw rate was introduced. The results showed that, even when the faults of the EMB actuators were severe and asymmetric between the left and right sides of the vehicle, overall vehicle stability—including lateral and yaw motions—was preserved through the proposed FTRC approach without FDD and steering control. Moreover, the relative weighting strategy effectively reduced lateral displacement, preventing lane departure. These findings highlight the significance of the proposed method for ensuring FTRC in electrified braking systems, enhancing safety, reducing lateral displacement, preventing lane departure, ensuring real-time capability, and reducing the complexity required in practical FTC. This paper presents the design, optimization, and validation of a dual three-phase yokeless and segmented armature (YASA) axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine for aerospace actuators. The proposed 12-slot, 10-pole topology employs segmented soft magnetic composite (SMC) stator teeth integrated into an additively manufactured aluminium holder, combining modularity, weight reduction, and improved thermal conduction. A multi-objective optimization process based on 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was applied to balance torque capability and losses. The manufacturable design achieved a peak torque of 28.3 Nm at 1400 rpm and a peak output power of 3.5 kW with an efficiency of 81.6%, while limiting short-circuit currents to 14 Arms. Transient structural simulations revealed that three-phase short circuits induce unbalanced axial forces, exciting rotor wobbling—a phenomenon not previously reported for YASA machines. A prototype was fabricated and tested, with static torque measurements deviating by 8.6% from FEA predictions. By contrast, line-to-line back-EMF and generator-mode power output exhibited larger discrepancies (up to 20%), attributed to the frequency-dependent permeability and localized eddy currents of the SMC stator material introduced during EDM machining. These results demonstrate both the feasibility and the limitations of YASA AFPM machines for aerospace applications. Full article

To address the issue of output anomalies that frequently occur in position sensors of permanent magnet synchronous motors within electromechanical actuation systems operating in harsh environments and can lead to degradation in system performance or operational interruptions, this paper proposes an integrated method for fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control based on the Cubature Kalman Filter (CKF). This approach effectively combines state reconstruction, fault diagnosis, and fault-tolerant control functions. It employs a CKF observer that utilizes innovation and residual sequences to achieve high-precision reconstruction of rotor position and speed, with convergence assured through Lyapunov stability analysis. Furthermore, a diagnostic mechanism that employs dual-parameter thresholds for position residuals and abnormal duration is introduced, facilitating accurate identification of various fault modes, including signal disconnection, stalling, drift, intermittent disconnection, and their coupled complex faults, while autonomously triggering fault-tolerant strategies. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method maintains excellent accuracy in state reconstruction and fault tolerance under disturbances such as parameter perturbations, sudden load changes, and noise interference, significantly enhancing the system’s operational reliability and robustness in challenging conditions. Electro-mechanical brake (EMB) systems have garnered significant attention due to their distributed architecture. However, their signals from the brake pedal to the wheel-end actuators (WEAs) are transmitted electrically, meaning that any fault in EMB systems can severely impair the braking performance of vehicles. Consequently, the functional safety issues of EMB systems are the primary limitation of their widespread adoption. In response, this study first introduced the typical architectures of EMB and evaluated the automotive safety integrity level (ASIL) that must be achieved. Based on this, an EMB system architecture that satisfies functional safety standards was proposed. To accurately analyze the main factors affecting the probabilistic metric for hardware failures (PMHF) of the architecture, the failure rate of WEAs is further discussed. Specifically, a Markov chain was employed to define the operating states of the WEA matrix. The availability of each operating state was assessed based on the fault-tolerant control strategy. Finally, the failure rates of critical EMB parts, particularly the WEA matrix, were calculated. The results indicate that the unavailability of the WEA matrix is 9.244 × 10−3 FIT. Furthermore, the PMHFs of the EMB system for each safety goal are 6.14 FIT, 5.89 FIT, and 6.03 FIT, respectively, satisfying the ASIL-D requirements. Full article

Accuracy of electro-mechanical actuator in aircraft is susceptible to variable operation conditions such as electromagnetic interference, changeable temperature or loss of maintenance, leading in turn to flight performance degradation. This paper proposed an unified control paradigm that aims to keep aircraft’s velocity in a safe boundary and shorten the system stabilizing time in presence of actuator deviation. The controller is derived following a practical finite-time-convergence (FTC) with extended dynamics, and an integrated state-constraint structure so as to restrict air vehicle’s attitude rate or translation velocity. It is proved that the system state converges to a sphere near the origin in a finite time, the state trajectory is always remain within the prescribed range, and all signals of the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded. Compared simulation with the quadratic Lyapunov-based FTC method and an asymptotic convergence controller are conducted on an unmanned helicopter prototype. Results show that the proposed controller enhances the dynamic and fault-tolerant performance of resisting actuator fluctuation. Full article

The emergence of eVTOL (electrical Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft necessitates the development of safe and efficient systems to meet stringent certification and operational requirements. The primary state-of-the-art technology for flight control actuation in eVTOL aircraft is electro-mechanical actuators (EMAs), which heavily rely on multiple redundancies of critical components to achieve fault tolerance. However, challenges persist in terms of insufficient reliability, immaturity, and a lack of a measurable evaluation method. This research addresses these issues by elucidating the design requirements for EMAs in eVTOL aircraft and proposing a systematic design and evaluation approach for EMA architecture. A key enhancement involves the incorporation of decentralized voting and monitoring (VoDeMo) mechanisms within the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) to improve the overall safety of the EMA. The paper introduces an innovative triple-dual redundant architecture for aircraft control effectors, comprising three dissimilar lanes of ECUs and two similar redundant parallel channels of power electronics and motors. The design is synergistically supported by a comprehensive evaluation that incorporates quantifiable Model-Based Safety Assessment (MBSA), utilizing both physical simulation and logical safety models. Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) tests are conducted on a constructed prototype to validate the proposed architecture. Full article

A new type dissimilar redundant actuation system (NT-DRAS), which is composed of an electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) and an electro-mechanical actuator (EMA), is applied in high value unmanned aerial vehicles such as the future near space vehicles to improve their reliability and performance index simultaneously. Further improvement in the flight safety is achieved with the fault-tolerant control (FTC) technique which deals with system faults. This paper proposes a novel convex optimization-based fault-tolerant control (CO-FTC) strategy for the NT-DRAS subject to gradual faults which are included in the state space representation of the system. A convex analysis-based treatment for system uncertainty caused by gradual faults is applied to determine the control gain matrix. The existence condition of the control gain matrix is optimized in the linear matrix inequality (LMI) form. Finally, the determined subsystems based on the novel technique is used to solve the modeled robust FTC problem. Case studies of NT-DRAS subject to different gradual faults have been accomplished to illustrate the FTC necessity for NT-DRAS. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed CO-FTC strategy is validated by comparative analysis of the simulation results. Full article

With the increasing demand for high-performance controllers in micro- and nano-systems, it is crucial to account for the effects of unexpected faults in control inputs during the design process. To tackle this challenge, we present a new approach that leverages an estimator-based super-twisting control technique that is capable of regulating chaos in fractional-order arch micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) resonators. We begin by studying the governing equation of a fractional-order arch MEMS resonator, followed by a thorough exploration of its chaotic properties. We then outline the design process for our novel control technique. The proposed technique takes into consideration the effects of uncertainty and faults in the control input by utilizing a finite time estimator and a super-twisting algorithm. The proposed technique addresses important challenges in the control of MEMS in real-world applications by providing fault tolerance, which enables the controller to withstand unexpected faults in the control input. We apply our controller to the fractional-order arch MEMS resonator, conducting numerical simulations. The numerical findings reveal that our proposed control technique is capable of stabilizing the system’s dynamics, even in the presence of a time-evolving fault in the control actuator. These results provide compelling evidence of the efficacy of our approach to control, despite the presence of an evolving fault. Full article

This research investigates the stabilization and control of an uncertain Euler–Bernoulli nano-beam with fixed ends. The governing partial differential equations of motion for the nano-beam are derived using Hamilton’s principle and the non-local strain gradient theory. The Galerkin method is then applied to transform the resulting dimensionless partial differential equation into a nonlinear ordinary differential equation. A novel fault-tolerant terminal sliding mode control technique is proposed to address the uncertainties inherent in micro/nano-systems and the potential for faults and failures in control actuators. The proposed controller includes a finite time estimator, the stability of which and the convergence of the error dynamics are established using the Lyapunov theorem. The significance of this study lies in its application to the field of micro/nano-mechanics, where the precise control and stabilization of small-scale systems is crucial for the development of advanced technologies such as nano-robotics and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). The proposed control technique addresses the inherent uncertainties and potential for faults in these systems, making it a valuable choice for practical applications. The simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme and the high accuracy of the estimation algorithm. Full article

As an important equipment for deep well hoisting, the safe and stable operation of the Blair mine hoist is vital for the development and utilization of deep mineral resources. However, it is always a challenging task to keep consistent wire rope tension in the event of an actuator fault. In this study, an adaptive dynamic surface technology-based actuator fault-tolerant scheme is proposed. A fault observer with a neural network adaptation term is designed to estimate the loss of actuator efficiency caused by faults. Considering the redundant characteristic of the two actuators, a novel dynamic surface technology-based controller with a fuzzy assignment and state constraints is developed to eliminate the impact of fault. The stability of the closed-loop system under the proposed strategy is theoretically proved by rigorous Lyapunov analysis. Comparative experiments under various conditions are carried out on a xPC based mine hoist platform, and the results show the applicability together with the superiority of the proposed scheme. The work deals with the model-based characterization of the failure transients of a fail-safe rotary EMA developed by Umbragroup (Italy) for the flap movables of the RACER helicopter-plane by Airbus Helicopters (France). Since the reference application requires quasi-static position-tracking with high disturbance-rejection capability, the attention is focused on control hardover faults which determine an actuator runaway from the commanded setpoint. To perform the study, a high-fidelity nonlinear model of the EMA is developed from physical first principles and the main features of health-monitoring and closed-loop control functions (integrating the conventional nested loops architecture with a deformation feedback loop enhancing the actuator stiffness) are presented. The EMA model is then validated with experiments by identifying its parameters by ad-hoc tests. Simulation results are finally proposed to characterize the failure transients in worst case scenarios by highlighting the importance of using a specifically designed back-electromotive damper circuitry into the EMA power electronics to limit the position deviation after the fault detection. The work deals with the development of deterministic model-based condition-monitoring algorithms for an electromechanical flight control actuator with fault-tolerant architecture, in which two permanent magnets synchronous motors are coupled with differential ball screws in speed-summing paradigm, so that the system can operate even after a motor fault, an inverter fault or a mechanical jamming. To demonstrate the potential applicability of the system for safety-critical aerospace applications, the failure transients related to major fault modes have to be characterised and analysed. By focusing the attention to jamming faults, a detailed nonlinear model of the actuator is developed from physical first principles and experimentally validated in both time and frequency domains for normal condition and with different types of jamming. The validated model is then used to design the condition-monitoring algorithms and to characterize the system failure transient, by simulating mechanical blocks in different locations of the transmission. The operability after the fault, obtained via fault-tolerant control strategy and position regulator reconfiguration, is also verified, by highlighting and discussing possible enhancements and criticalities. Electro-mechanical actuators (EMAs) are a primary actuation technology for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Intensive research has been conducted for designing and evaluating fault-tolerant EMAs for flight controls of UAVs to ensure their compliance with new airworthiness requirements for safe operation over civilian zones. The state-of-the-art research involves several fault-tolerant architectures for EMAs based on parallel electric motors or a single motor with internal fault-tolerant features. In this study, a fault-tolerant architecture is introduced, comprised of two serial electric motors driven by two isolated controllers and a health monitoring system. The procedures of developing various fault-tolerant features are discussed with a deep focus on designing health monitoring functions and evaluating their influence on the overall actuator stability and availability. This work has been conducted and evaluated based on operational data for ALAADy: a heavy gyrocopter-type UAV at DLR (German Aerospace Center). Full article

The aircraft hydraulic system is very important for the actuation system and its failure has led to a number of catastrophic accidents in the past few years. The reasons for hydraulic loss can be leakage, blockage, and structural damage. Fortunately, the development of more electric aircraft (MEA) provides a new means of solving this difficult problem. This paper designs an active fault tolerant control (AFTC) method for MEA suffering from total hydraulic loss and actuation system failure. Two different kinds of scenarios are considered: leakage/blockage and vertical tail damage. With the application of the dissimilar redundant actuation system (DRAS) in MEA, a switching mechanism can be used to change the hydraulic actuation (HA) system into an electro-hydrostatic actuation (EHA) system when the whole hydraulic system fails. Taking account of the gap between HA and EHA, a degraded model is built. As for vertical tail damage, engine differential thrust control is adopted to help regain lateral-directional stability. The engine thrust dynamics are modeled and the mapping relationship between engine differential thrust and rudder deflection is formulated. Moreover, model reference control (MRC) and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) are used to design the AFTC method. Comparative simulation with the NASA generic transportation model (GTM) is carried out to prove the proposed strategy. Full article

Star-connected multiphase AC drives are being considered for electromovility applications such as electromechanical actuators (EMA), where high power density and fault tolerance is demanded. As for three-phase systems, common-mode voltage (CMV) is an issue for multiphase drives. CMV leads to shaft voltages between rotor and stator windings, generating bearing currents which accelerate bearing degradation and produce high electromagnetic interferences (EMI). CMV effects can be mitigated by using appropriate modulation techniques. Thus, this work proposes a new Hybrid PWM algorithm that effectively reduces CMV in five-phase AC electric drives, improving their reliability. All the mathematical background required to understand the proposal, i.e., vector transformations, vector sequences and calculation of analytical expressions for duty cycle determination are detailed. Additionally, practical details that simplify the implementation of the proposal in an FPGA are also included. This technique, HAZSL5M5-PWM, extends the linear range of the AZSL5M5-PWM modulation, providing a full linear range. Simulation results obtained in an accurate multiphase EMA model are provided, showing the validity of the proposed modulation approach. Full article
