The aerodynamic performance of racing motorcycles plays a crucial role in improving speed, stability, and rider control under dynamic conditions. While most existing studies focus on front-mounted winglets and fairing extensions, the aerodynamic role of rear fairing appendages remains comparatively unexplored despite their potential influence on drag, downforce distribution, and wake behaviour. In this work, three alternative rear winglet configurations were parametrically designed in Siemens NX and systematically evaluated within a validated CFD framework based on Simcenter STAR-CCM+, with the aim of assessing how geometric variations influence aerodynamic performance and achieve a favourable trade-off between reduced aerodynamic resistance and enhanced rear downforce. The numerical setup employed has been previously validated against wind-tunnel measurements in similar aerodynamic applications, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the predicted flow fields. A Design Space Exploration (DSE) was performed through an automated multi-software workflow, enabling systematic variation in key geometric parameters and real-time assessment of their aerodynamic effects. The study revealed distinct influences of the different configurations on drag and lift coefficients, as well as on wake structure and flow detachment, highlighting the critical aerodynamic mechanisms governing rear stability and flow closure. Through iterative design and simulation, the workflow identified the most effective configuration, achieving a balance between reduced aerodynamic resistance and increased downforce, both essential for competitive racing performance. The results demonstrate the potential of integrating parametric modelling, automated CFD simulation, and DSE optimization in the aerodynamic design phase. This methodology not only offers new insights into the scarcely studied rear aerodynamic region of racing motorcycles but also establishes a replicable framework for future developments involving advanced optimization algorithms, experimental validation, and wake-interaction analyses between leading and trailing riders. This study presents a novel method for the rapid identification of key performance indicators (KPIs) from measured riding data of a Ducati Panigale V2 motorcycle, aimed at enhancing racing performance through a deeper understanding of rider-vehicle interaction. The methodology involves the design and implementation of mathematical tools within the RaceStudio3 software to analyze data from the motorcycle’s sensor system. This approach facilitates the swift detection of critical events, including gearshift delays, improper throttle control, and suspension issues. The fusion of data from the motorcycle enables a comprehensive evaluation of the rider’s influence on performance. The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed method to provide valuable insights for optimizing motorcycle setup and rider technique. Full article

Objectives: Sports-related concussion (SRC) is mostly associated with contact and combat sports. However, emerging evidence suggest that cyclists are also at risk of repeated concussion injury. Moreover, long-term neurophysiological outcomes in cycling cohorts remain underexplored. This novel study investigated the long-term effect of repetitive concussions in cyclists. Road, mountain biking (MTB), and BMX riders with a history of concussions and self-reported persistent symptoms were assess for neurophysiology and cognitive–motor performance compared to previously concussed cyclists with no ongoing symptoms. Both groups were compared to age-matched with controls. Methods: Using a cross-sectional between-group design, 25 cyclists with a history of concussions (15 symptomatic, 10 asymptomatic) and 20 controls completed symptom reporting, cognitive and balance assessments (SCAT5), sensorimotor testing using vibrotactile stimulation, and neurophysiological assessments via transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Results: Symptomatic cyclists reported a higher number of concussions compared to asymptomatic cyclists (p = 0.041). Cognitive testing revealed large effects (d > 1.0), with impaired concentration in symptomatic cyclists compared to controls (p = 0.005). Motor assessments demonstrated large effects (d > 1.0), with slower tandem gait times (p < 0.001) and greater errors (p = 0.02) in the symptomatic group. Sensorimotor testing indicated slowed simple reaction times (p = 0.001) and poorer temporal order judgement (p = 0.038). TMS showed large effects (d > 1.0) in increased cortical inhibition in the symptomatic group, with prolong cortical silent periods (p < 0.05) and large effects (d > 1.0), and reduced short interval intracortical inhibition (p = 0.001) compared to asymptomatic cyclists and controls. Conclusions: Cyclists reporting persistent symptoms showed greater cortical inhibition and impaired cognitive–motor performance, consistent with findings in contact sport athletes. These results suggest that repeated concussions in cycling carry risk of chronic neurophysiological alterations. Cycling disciplines should consider more rigorous concussion identification protocols and stricter management strategies to mitigate persistent and long-term consequences. Full article

Delivery platforms in urban logistics connect providers with customers through distribution riders, who are usually distinguished by low incomes and limited social rights. This paper aims to compare and analyze the freelance and employment models for riders in different European countries in terms of social sustainability, i.e., work motivation and labor rights. To reach this goal, two activities were performed. On the one hand, qualitative interviews with German and Italian riders were carried out. On the other hand, a dynamic metaheuristic algorithm was developed and implemented to simulate an employment model with a central provider that manages order requests in real-time. The qualitative interviews indicate that riders’ motivations differ between freelance riders and employed riders: freelance riders do feel more controlled. Using a quantitative algorithm, this manuscript shows that when an efficient centralized order–rider assignment strategy is applied, a socially sustainable and simultaneously profitable employment model for food delivery businesses is possible. The results have the potential to legitimize adequate rights and salaries for riders while allowing digital platforms to operate profitably. Such win–win situations could support the implementation of platform structures across different logistics sectors and overcome conflicts regarding working rights in such contexts. Full article

Advanced rider assistance systems (ARAS) play a crucial role in enhancing motorcycle safety through features such as collision avoidance, blind-spot detection, and adaptive cruise control, which rely heavily on sensors like radar, cameras, and LiDAR. However, their performance is often compromised under adverse weather conditions, leading to sensor interference, reduced visibility, and inconsistent reliability. This study evaluates the effectiveness and limitations of ARAS technologies in rain, fog, and snow, focusing on how sensor performance, algorithms, techniques, and dataset suitability influence system reliability. A thematic analysis was conducted, selecting studies focused on ARAS in adverse weather conditions based on specific selection criteria. The analysis shows that while ARAS offers substantial safety benefits, its accuracy declines in challenging environments. Existing datasets, algorithms, and techniques were reviewed to identify the most effective options for ARAS applications. However, more comprehensive weather-resilient datasets and adaptive multi-sensor fusion approaches are still needed. Advancing in these areas will be critical to improving the robustness of ARAS and ensuring safer riding experiences across diverse environmental conditions. Full article

Rapid advancements in peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming technologies have significantly impacted digital communication, enabling scalable, decentralized, and real-time content distribution. Despite these advancements, challenges persist, including dynamic topology management, high latency, security vulnerabilities, and unfair resource sharing (e.g., free rider). While software-defined networking (SDN) and blockchain individually address aspects of these limitations, their combined potential for comprehensive optimization remains underexplored. This study proposes a distributed SDN (DSDN) architecture enhanced with blockchain support to provide secure, scalable, and reliable P2P video streaming. We identified research gaps through critical analysis of the literature. We systematically compared traditional P2P, SDN-enhanced, and hybrid architectures across six performance metrics: latency, throughput, packet loss, authentication accuracy, packet delivery ratio, and control overhead. Simulations with 200 peers demonstrate that the proposed hybrid SDN–blockchain framework achieves a latency of 140 ms, a throughput of 340 Mbps, an authentication accuracy of 98%, a packet delivery ratio of 97.8%, a packet loss ratio of 2.2%, and a control overhead of 9.3%, outperforming state-of-the-art solutions such as NodeMaps, the reinforcement learning-based routing framework (RL-RF), and content delivery networks-P2P networks (CDN-P2P). This work establishes a scalable and attack-resilient foundation for next-generation P2P streaming. Full article

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

The paper presents the innovative approach to a high-fidelity motorcycle riding simulator based on VR (Virtual Reality)-visualization, equipped with a Gough-Stewart 6-DOF (Degrees of Freedom) motion platform. Such a solution integrates a real-time tension sensor system as a source for highly realistic motion cueing control as well as the servomotor integrated into the steering system. Tension forces are measured at four points on the mock-up chassis, allowing a comprehensive analysis of rider interaction during various maneuvers. The simulator is developed to simulate realistic riding scenarios with immersive motion and visual feedback, enhanced with the simulation of external influences—headwind. This paper presents results of a validation study—pilot experiments conducted to evaluate selected riding scenarios and validate the innovative simulator setup, focusing on force distribution and system responsiveness to support further research in motorcycle HMI (Human–Machine Interaction), rider behavior, and training. The inherent static instability of bicycles poses significant safety risks, driving research into active stabilization systems within the broader field of autonomous vehicle control. This study proposes a Variable-Speed Control Moment Gyroscope (VSCMG) system for bicycle attitude stabilization, aiming to enhance rider safety and system endurance by addressing the high power consumption of traditional Single-Gimbal CMG (SGCMG) systems. A single-axis balance model was developed, employing a proportional–derivative (PD) controller to compute the total torque demand, combined with least-squares-based power-constrained optimization and a center-of-mass alignment algorithm to achieve stable control. Experimental validation was conducted on a simplified single-axis balancing setup, designed as an abstracted bicycle model for verification purposes, equipped with two VSCMG units. This setup demonstrated the rapid stabilization of a 15.5° tilt to near 0°, with significantly reduced steady-state power consumption compared to SGCMG systems, and an effective mitigation of external disturbances at 4000 RPM, though oscillations increased at 1500 RPM. The VSCMG system achieves a balance between stability and energy efficiency through dynamic flywheel speed adjustment, and future research can enhance disturbance rejection capabilities by varying the speed, offering a viable approach for long-endurance autonomous bicycles. Background: Electric motorized rental scooters (ES) were introduced in Italy in 2019 as an alternative form of urban transportation, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. As their popularity has grown, a parallel increase in ES-related injuries has been observed. This study aims to investigate the types and patterns of ES-related injuries and to identify potentially modifiable risk factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients admitted to the Emergency Department of Policlinico Umberto I in Rome between January 2020 and December 2022 following ES-related trauma. Collected data included demographics, injury mechanisms and types, helmet use, Injury Severity Score (ISS), blood alcohol levels, and patient outcomes. Results: A total of 411 individuals presented to the Emergency Department due to ES-related injuries, either as riders or pedestrians. The mean age was 31 years (range: 2–93); 38 patients (9%) were under 18 years of age. Fifty-six accidents (14%) occurred during work-related commutes. Only three riders (0.7%) wore helmets, and nine patients (2%) had blood alcohol levels > 0.50 g/L. Cranial injuries (134 cases, 32%) and upper limb fractures (93 cases, 23%) were the most frequently reported serious injuries. The mean ISS was 4.5; 17 patients (4%) had an ISS ≥ 16. A total of 270 orthopedic injuries and 118 (29%) maxillofacial injuries were documented. Head trauma was reported in 115 patients (28%), with 19 cases classified as severe traumatic brain injuries. Twenty-three patients (5.5%) were hospitalized, three (0.7%) required intensive care, and one patient (0.2%) died. Conclusions: ES-related injuries are becoming increasingly common and present a significant public health concern. A nationwide effort is warranted to improve rider safety through mandatory helmet use, protective equipment, alcohol consumption control, and stricter enforcement of speed regulations. Full article

Riding comfort and safety are essential requirements for any form of transportation but particularly for electric bicycles (e-bikes), which are highly affected by varying road conditions. These factors largely depend on the effectiveness of the e-bike’s control strategy. While several studies have proposed control approaches that address comfort and safety, vibration—an influential factor in both structural integrity and rider experience—has received limited attention during the design phase. Moreover, many commercially available e-bikes provide manual assistance-level settings, leaving comfort and safety management to the rider’s experience. This study proposes a Road-Adaptive Vibration Reduction System (RAVRS) that can be deployed on an e-bike rider’s smartphone to automatically maintain riding comfort and safety using manual assistance control. A fuzzy-based control algorithm is adopted to dynamically select the appropriate assistance level, aiming to minimize vibration while maintaining velocity and acceleration within thresholds associated with comfort and safety. This study presents a vibration analysis to highlight the significance of vibration control in improving electronic reliability, reducing mechanical fatigue, and enhancing user experience. A functional prototype of the RAVRS was implemented and evaluated using real-world data collected from experimental trips. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves effective control of speed and acceleration, with success rates of 83.97% and 99.79%, respectively, outperforming existing control strategies. In addition, the proposed RAVRS significantly enhances the riding experience by improving both comfort and safety. Full article

This study analyzes factors influencing injury severity in motorcycle accidents involving non-helmeted riders using Bayesian spatiotemporal logistic models. Five models were developed, four of which incorporated different spatiotemporal configurations, including spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal interaction error terms. The results indicate that the optimal model integrated Leroux CAR spatial priors, temporal random walks, and interaction terms, achieving 86.74% classification accuracy, with a 3% reduction in the DIC value; obtaining the lowest numerical fit demonstrating spatiotemporal interactions is critical for capturing complex risk patterns (e.g., rain amplifying nighttime collision severity). The results highlight rain (OR = 1.53), age ≥ 50 (OR = 1.90), and bi-directional roads (OR = 1.82) as critical risk factors. Based on these findings, several sustainable traffic safety strategies are proposed. Short-term measures include IoT-based dynamic speed control on high-risk roads and app-enforced helmet checks via ride-hailing platforms. Long-term strategies integrate age-specific behavioral training focusing on hazard perception and reaction time improvement, which reduced elderly fatalities by 18% in Japan’s “Silver Rider” program by directly modifying high-risk riding habits (non-helmets). These solutions, validated by global case studies, demonstrate that helmet use could mitigate over 60% of severe head injuries in these high-risk scenarios, promoting sustainable traffic governance through spatiotemporal risk targeting and helmet enforcement. In smart cities, bicycle-sharing systems have become essential as last-mile transportation solutions, seamlessly integrating into urban mobility networks worldwide. To improve riding efficiency, the development of automatic gear-shifting systems for electric bicycles has gained significant attention. This study presents a novel fuzzy logic controller (FLC) designed to address the challenges of frequent and unstable gear shifts in automatic bicycle transmissions. Unlike traditional systems that rely solely on velocity or cadence as inputs, the proposed FLC incorporates both acceleration and slope data to enhance shifting stability and cadence regulation. By replacing velocity with acceleration and integrating slope information, the system minimizes frequent shifting and improves overall performance. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach reduces acceleration ripple, stabilizes gear-shifting, and maintains cadence within the desired range, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable riding experience. The proposed approach significantly reduces acceleration ripple by 1 m/s2, maintains target cadence, and aligns gear shifts with design intent, yielding a substantial 20% safety improvement. These advancements offer particular promise for public bicycle-sharing systems, providing a robust and adaptable solution suited to diverse cycling conditions and rider profiles. Full article

Riding Risk: Factors Shaping Helmet Use Among Two-Wheeled Electric Vehicle Riders in Fuzhou, China

With the rapid increase in the number of two-wheeled electric vehicles, the number of accidents related to them has also greatly increased. However, despite facing a huge threat from accidents, the helmet, an efficient and legally required protection for riders, is not popular with Chinese two-wheeled electric vehicles riders. To study the factors affecting helmet use for these riders, this paper conducted an observational study to collect helmet use data for 16,207 two-wheeled electric vehicle riders in Fuzhou, China. With these data, this paper built a multivariate logistic regression model to study the main effects of various factors on helmet use, and analyze the interaction effects of these factors. Results showed that, on the one hand, area, weather, temperature, controller, separated non-motor-vehicle lanes, time, rider’s age, and type of vehicle had significant effects on helmet use and the interaction between these factors is significant, especially the interaction between weather, temperature and other factors. On the other hand, level of service, gender and whether the riders are food delivery workers have no significant impact on helmet use, but show significant interaction effects with other factors. Using a Safe System Framework to Examine the Roadway Mortality Increase Pre-COVID-19 and in the COVID-19 Era in New York State

Roadway mortality increased during COVID-19, reversing a multi-decade downward trend. The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) was used to examine contributing factors pre-COVID-19 and in the COVID-19 era using the five pillars of the Safe System framework: (1) road users; (2) vehicles; (3) roadways; (4) speed; and (5) post-crash care. Two study time periods were matched to control for seasonality differences pre-COVID-19 (n = 1725, 1 April 2018–31 December 2019) and in the COVID-19 era (n = 2010, 1 April 2020–31 December 2021) with a three-month buffer period between the two time frames excluded. Four of the five pillars of the safe system had road safety indicators that worsened during the pandemic. Mortality was 19.7% higher for motor vehicle occupants and 45.1% higher for riders of motorized two-wheeled vehicles. In adjusted analyses, failure to use safety equipment (safety belts/helmets) was associated with 44% higher mortality. Two road user groups, non-motorized bicyclists and pedestrians, did not contribute significantly to higher mortality. Urban roadway crashes were higher compared to rural crashes. Additional scientific inquiry into factors associated with COVID-19-era mortality using the Safe System framework yielded important scientific insights to inform prevention efforts. Motorized two-wheeled vehicles contribute disproportionately to pandemic-era higher mortality and constitute an emerging road safety issue that deserves further attention. Full article
