1–6 September 2024 12th Conference on Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy and Its Applications

Lisbon, Portugal

The international conference entitled Conference on Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy and its Applications belongs to the conference series organized under the auspices of the International Dielectric Society (IDS), aiming to bring together experts from academia and industry to discuss recent advances and future trends in science and technology in the area of materials and dielectric properties. Started in 2001, and having already been held in several European countries, the 12th edition—BDS Lisbon2024—will happen for the first time in Portugal, in Lisbon, from September 1st to 6th, 2024, at the Rectorate of the NOVA University of Lisbon, Campolide Campus.

Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) is a powerful experimental technique that allows us to investigate the molecular dynamics of materials that respond to an outer oscillating electrical field. Nowadays, combined methods and equipment covering up to 16 decades of frequency allow us to explore a panoply of time-scales ranging from short-range and very local processes to long-range cooperative processes, activated under a set of predefined temperatures (and pressures). Besides molecular dynamics, charge transport and interfacial phenomena in heterogeneous disordered systems are also able to be characterized, as well as confinement and non-linear effects. Moreover, time-dependent events can be dielectrically monitored as chemical reactions, molecular interconversion, phase transformations and physical ageing. BDS has been applied in different fields of science and technology ranging from pharmaceutics and biology to energy and the environment. Therefore, a variety of materials can be investigated by BDS, like molecular and macromolecular compounds, plastic crystals, ionic liquids, liquid crystals, eutectic systems and newly emerging functional materials as self-healing/recyclable dynamic networks.

Considering the multidisciplinary approach and the broad set of applications of the technique, this meeting is also open to researchers outside of the dielectric community whose research could start new synergies at both experimental and theoretical levels.

The following topics will be addressed in the devoted sessions:

  • S01 Polymer Dynamics;
  • S02 Soft Matter Dynamics and Phase Transitions in Amorphous, Partially Ordered and Ordered Systems;
  • S03 The impact of external variables in dielectric properties;
  • S04 Water, Hydrogen Bonded and Biological Systems;
  • S05 Charge Transport and Interfacial Effects;
  • S06 Monitoring of Chemical Reactions, Crystallization process and Physical Ageing;
  • S07 Ferroelectrics and Ceramics;
  • S08 BDS in relation to other Spectroscopic or Scattering Techniques;
  • S09 Confinement Effects;
  • S10 Modeling, Theory and Simulation;
  • S11 Industrial Applications.

16–18 June 2024 EMEA2024: Workshop on Ion Exchange Membranes for Energy Applications

Bad Zwischenahn, Germany

Welcome to EMEA2024: Workshop on Ion Exchange Membranes for Energy Applications.

Material developments and ion exchange membrane-based systems for energy applications will be discussed by representatives from research and industry, with a focus on anion exchange membranes. In addition to the talks, a poster exhibition offers scientists, especially young researchers and students, the opportunity to present their work. A prize for the best poster will be awarded. An opening presentation followed by a get-together and a conference dinner will provide additional opportunities for lively scientific exchanges in a welcoming atmosphere.
