Special Issue Information

Personalised medicine aims to identify preventive and therapeutic strategies that combine effectiveness and efficiency with the lowest possible biological cost. Personalised medicine in Dentistry makes use of technology, which becomes a valuable support for medical choices. The technologies at our disposal range from early diagnostics in oral soft tissues pathologies, to early diagnosis in cariology, to the three-dimensional study of anatomical structures in surgery and implant prosthetic rehabilitation, to artificial intelligence applications in diagnostic imaging, and the study of the environmental impacts of therapeutic and oral hygiene procedures, to dental omics and the study of the influences of epigenetics on the phenotype.  Lastly, dentistry is a branch of medicine where aesthetics very often corresponds to health. We therefore also have technologies to study dental calorimetry and scanning of the dental arches, the correlation of colorimetric alterations of developmental defects of enamel with pre- and peri-natal medical history and as a prognostic index of the evolution of the most severe forms of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH).

Oral health promotion, maintenance and goal involve adopting techniques, tools and times that can vary according to different needs. Technology in dentistry has greatly helped professionals obtain excellent oral health standards thanks to interventions calibrated and studied on patients' compliance and concordance. The combination of technology and medical science remains the driving force behind the evolution of contemporary oral health standards.
