Cover Story: Etonogestrel subcutaneous implantation (ENG) is a highly effective long-term reversible contraceptive for adolescents but requires thorough counseling. Irregular bleeding is common initially and may persist for a few months before improving, potentially affecting body image and adherence. Some authors report weight gain, though the evidence is mixed. Rare risks include implant damage from trauma or misplacement, which can compromise effectiveness, and a very low risk of ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, mood changes in line with anxiety or depression may occur. For adolescents with chronic conditions like type 1 diabetes or PCOS, ENG may help manage symptoms. Tailored, empathetic advice is crucial for informed choices. View this paper
