Reviewer’s Report on the manuscript entitled:

Automatic sleep staging based on single channel EEG signal using null space pursuit decomposition algorithm

The authors proposed an automatic sleep staging method based on null space pursuit decomposition algorithm of single-channel EEG. The manuscript is generally interesting, but the presentation can be improved. Below, please see my comments.

Please define all the acronyms both in Abstract and in the Introduction.

Line 14 and 15. Please re-write. Those numbers are not clear to which datasets and category they refer to.

Figure 1. The last box has a typo. It should be “Discussion” not “Dicussion”

At the end of the Introduction, please use bullet points to highlight the main contribution of the paper.

Section 2 should be called Materials and Methods. Then please first create a subsection called 2.1 datasets and pre-processing, then another subsection called 2.2 Methods.

Figure 2. The font size of the text and numbers in the plots should be enlarged to have almost the same size as the font size of figure caption.

Lines 85 and 86 can be removed.

Line 120 and equation (2). Should not it be the second derivative of alpha(t) with respect to t? The + sign is confusing. Please check and correct.

Figure 3 can be improved. The font size should be enlarged and the plots can share the same x-axis for a cleaner display. For example, look at Figure 4 in Grobbelaar et al. (2022) https://doi.org/10.3390/signals3030035

Line 111. Please add the article above by Grobbelaar et al. (2022) here for justifying your claim of better denoising performance using wavelet analysis.

Line 243. Please remove “We think…”. Instead, talk about the sources of noise in EEG signals and methods used to denoise the single-channel EEG signals including wavelets. Please also include the following two articles to justify this further:

https://doi.org/10.1016/S1665-6423(13)71524-4

https://doi.org/10.3390/s22082948

In the Conclusion section, please use the past verb always. For example, in line 247. “We explored …”, etc.

Thank you for your contribution

Regards,

Reviewer 3 Report

The authors present an interesting work whose aim is to validate the use of NSP to detect sleep stages.

The work is done and presented properly. Although, some minor comments and concerns are included in the file attached.

Interesting work.
