Round  1

Reviewer 1 Report

high technological potential, well done experiments and simulations and good agreement theory and experimental results,

the article is structured, I miss the experimental part, some mistakes and some options can improve the article.

 row212 Vickers..must be earlier in experimental conditions, here add the used load

generally the Vickers hardness is Written in HV not Hv! and better HV3 or HV10, the letter is the load

row 170 fig 6 the text must be of the same page under the image, not on new page!

row 205 number and unit with space 3 mm

row 206 force 5 t - t /tonne are not SI units --> in MPa or GPa!

Reviewer 2 Report

The article is interesting but contains a number of faults. 1. Incorrect title of article. In investigated process there is no    tempering. Instead "...Tailored Tool Tempering..." I sugggest "...Tailored   Tool Thermo-mechanical Treatment..." 2. Vickers hardness units are given as HV (not Hv) 3. Unit of force are given in capital letters. Therefore blank holding force   is correct 5 T (not 5 t). In Si system unit of force is N, therefore correct  is 49,050 kN  4. Incorrect reference [10] in line 86. QFA method was proposed by Evanch and  Staley in Met. Trans., 1974,v.4,p 43-47   5. Materials constants in Table 2 are not correct. Constant K4 is 1223 K  (not 1173 K. Possibly it is the reason that constants K2 and K3 are different from    data Ko et.al.[15] and Byung-Nin Kim (co-author [15]) should know it.   In my opinion Chapter 3.1 is redundant because these data were published in [15]    and correct Table from [15] in article text would be sufficient. 6. Material constants in Table 3 are not quite correct. Data of interface heat transfer     coeff. are given in [15], not [18] 7. Line 173 - is: "hardenability", correct: "hardness" 8. Table 6 - units may be given in title raw only (as in Table 4) 9. Line 230 - is: "bainte", correct: "bainite" 10. Line 240 - is: "harness", correct: "hardness"   11. Reference [11] in line 131 is incorrect (correct [15])  12. References: 2,12,16 contain errors

Round  2

Reviewer 2 Report

Text still needs correction:

1. Previous reference [10] was correct for equation (1). Do not change it, please. It is necessary to add reference of Evancho at.al. as [11]  without removing of Avrami! Of course further references (above 11) change their numbers

2. Title of chapter  3 has to be changed as in title of paper. You have no tempering in presented experiment. Tempering is usually used after quenching in order to decrease thermal and structural stresses and to improve plastic and impact properties. Sometimes self tempering occurs, if we stop cooling process above Ms temperature. But in described process heat is withdrawn from material all time by cooled tool. Is it true?

3. I still remind you, that units of force have to be described in capital letters. Therefore expression in line 193, "...load of 500 g..." should be corrected to "...load of 500 G..."

4. Units HV500 are not correct. Correct is: HV0,5, because in such case numbers are related to force in kG (not in G).
