Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The main purpose and topic of the presented scientific communication, is interesting and present a wide range of possible application. In this sense, would be desirable that a specific example be exposed and not only that it be noted.

The introduction seems not well balanced. The purpose of the introduction part, should be offered a preliminary information about the interest to perform the developed scientific work, expose briefly the details of the different parts that compose the scientific communication and give an overview of the possible impacts or application of the technique. However, from line 31 to 114 a review of work developed by other authors is extensively realized and just several lines are dedicated to explaining the work carried out in this paper. In this sense should be more appropriate to better understanding of the paper introduce the purpose and details of the current work developed by authors and don't bother the reader with a review of references.

The paragraph -> "Moreover, this is the first time that the frequency periodicity of sound intensity interference is applied to underwater ASR"- results in some way too ambitious. Would be desirable express the novelty of the work pointing the results and exploiting them, in terms of "is remarkable that the results coming from the study of interference frequency periodicity points that..., or present high accuracy in comparison with...".

The last but not least, should be convenient also to include some future steps or limitations like the influence of irregular bathymetry or the possibility to implement range dependent modelling varying the properties of the water column not only in depth but also in distance from the source.

Minor revision on the grammar avoiding phrases too long, difficult to understand (e.g  We adopt the normal mode method and simulate and analyze the interferogram of...).

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

1.The main purpose and topic of the presented scientific communication, is interesting and present a wide range of possible application. In this sense, would be desirable that a specific example be exposed and not only that it be noted.

Reply: First of all, the proposed method in this paper has been used for soliton internal wave localization in Reference [Piao, S.C.; Zhang, S.Z.; Liu, J.Q.; Li, X.M.; Kashif, I. Chinese Journal of Acoustics. 2020, 45, 637-645 (in Chinese).], secondly, the proposed method can be also applied to broadband acoustic source ranging as shown in this paper. Thirdly, the proposed method can be used for underwater vector acoustic field ranging in the same way. Fourthly, acoustic source localization in the air can be achieved as well according to the same method.

2.The introduction seems not well balanced. Reply: your opinion is right, and we will make some adjustment about the introduction accordingly. However, we also need to stress that this is the first time for the proposed method to be used in underwater acoustic source ranging, so it’s pretty hard for us to find related references, and the only reference that may be relative are that about source ranging based on waveguide invariant method, so we shall keep the part of MFP and waveguide invariant method in the introduction, and delete other part.

3.The paragraph -> "Moreover, this is the first time that the frequency periodicity of sound intensity interference is applied to underwater ASR"- results in some way too ambitious. Would be desirable express the novelty of the work pointing the results and exploiting them, in terms of "is remarkable that the results coming from the study of interference frequency periodicity points that..., or present high accuracy in comparison with...".

Reply: Yes, it’s better to tell what we have done as it is, and we will make some adjustment according to your advice.

4.The last but not least, should be convenient also to include some future steps or limitations like the influence of irregular bathymetry or the possibility to implement range dependent modelling varying the properties of the water column not only in depth but also in distance from the source.

Reply: your opinion is profound, and we shall add this idea into the conclusion.

5.Minor revision on the grammar avoiding phrases too long, difficult to understand (e.g  We adopt the normal mode method and simulate and analyze the interferogram of...).

Reply: Thank you for pointing out this drawback, and we shall follow your advice and divide long phrases into shorter ones accordingly.

  • Center all figures.
  • Use consistent formatting of symbols; for instance, $z_r$ instead of zr, or $R$ instead of R.
  • Check the references for proper author's names.

Thank you for your advice. Based on your advice, we have made adjustment as follows:

  1. All figures have been centered.
  2. All symbols that represent parameters have been expressed with italic font to tell them from other words and expressions.
  3. All the references have been checked, and the author’s name have been modified accordingly.

Dear authors,

the article is  important for new knowledge and comparison of datas from broadband sound intensity interference, frequency periodicity and source localization.

I have recommendations for

  1. Fig. 5 (a) and Fig. 6 (a):   - graphic dependencies are very close to each other, is it possible to enlarge them a bit?,
  2. Fig. 8 -align to the left side according to the other figures

Thank you for your advice, and we have made the following adjustment accordingly.

  1. We also find the problem with Fig. 5(a) and Fig. 6(a), and the main problem is that the relative error is so small that several different lines in the figures have been mixed. To deal with the problem, we change the error limitation from 1% to 10% for Fig. 5(a) and Fig .6(a), resulting in a clear figure in which different lines can be separated easily.
  2. Fig. 8 has been modified accordingly.
