Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear authors,

I had the opportunity to read your paper entitled “Supply and Demand Model for Chili Enterprise System” submitted for evaluation at Economies, to the section: Economic Development, Growth, and Natural Resources (Environment + Agriculture). While I applaud the paper's interest in the very timely and topical matter of supply and demand of chili in Indonesia, I have several serious concerns about the paper that I will outline below.

Title: suggest you change the title and include the statistical analyses performed in the article. I think that at this moment the title is much too general and does not include the essence of the whole article.

Abstract: I think it should be stated that the article study is carried out on hot pepper-producing companies in Indonesia. The purpose of the paper should be much clearer and correlate with the research question that I do not find in this paper. They should be respected the drafting requirements: background, methods, results, and conclusions Methods: briefly describe the main methods or treatments applied; Results: summarize the article's main findings; Conclusions: indicate the main conclusions or interpretations.

1. Introduction:  The introduction is very difficult to understand, it presents a lot of unrelated information. For example, in the first part (lines 22-39) it presents information about companies in a general way, the connection between the company and the chili production activity must be highlighted. From my point of view, I think that specific information should be presented here about companies that produce chili, or companies that sell chili in Indonesia. In the second part of the introduction (lines 40-52) it goes to how the data were collected, I think this part should be in the methodology. It is also very difficult to understand why the division is done by sub-districts, and district offices. I understand that you wanted to correlate the role of the population in increasing the demand for chili, but this information does not appear in the text. In line 57 you present that the data is collected monthly and the price is daily, you must make an average and estimate the monthly price. I don't understand the role of the information presented in lines 69-72, what you wanted to highlight here. At the end of the Introduction section, I believe that a short description of the paper should be introduced and the novelty of the research and its implications for stakeholders should be emphasized. It is not clear how the paper contributes to the literature, nor why this context is of interest. This should be made very clear in the introduction, so that the reader is aware of what is known in relation to the questions being posed, and how this paper will add to/challenge those findings. Motivating carefully the use of this context is also important.

2. Literature review: In this section, my only suggestion is to move figure 2 in the next section because is about the econometrics methodology. I appreciate that this section is well-founded from a scientific point of view and the cited sources are very current.

3. Methodology. Please detail all the abbreviations used in table 2. Please present the research hypotheses. Please pay more attention to formatting tables and figures. The methods are correct for the topic and purpose of this paper. In this part, I would like to mention the program with which all the statistical information was analyzed, and some brief details about it.  I think if you take into account the suggestions made earlier, this section is fine.

4. Results: Appliaction of Data Mining Techniques –I think you meant to say Application of Data Mining Techniques. I would appreciate if you formatted the information presented in the tables, I think you need to transform the comma from the numerical data in the tables into a point, at least in table 9 this is inconsistent (for example 611180,70 should be 61,1180.70)

5. Conclusions:  Regarding the conclusions, they are in accordance with the presented results. I appreciate that a paragraph has been introduced with recommendations and suggestions for future research.

In conclusion, this paper is well-written, and the data collection and analysis have been carefully conducted. This article offers several exciting contributions to this research area.

In the abstract and the introduction the authors intoduce their study talking about different type offresh chili, their sustitutability and complementarity. Based on data availability, the emprical analysis is focused on the comparison of chili maket and cayenne pepper.  This is  puzzling and should be revised. It should be cearly stated the focus of the paper in the abstract and in the introduction.

The literature review is mostly concerned on methodological issues and less on previuos literature on chili markets. It would be helpful to know the state of art on chili markets, considering the substability/complementarity concerns addressed in the introuction.

The list of names of variables is it confusing. It would be better to introduce the variable label (in parenthesis) when each variable is described. e.g. in line 270 ...of the supply of red chili in ton (QSCM), the number of exports (XCM)... It was very difficult for me to scroll the paper up and down to fully understand equations.

Check equations 2 and 3.

I'm also confused by the relevance the authors give to the 'granularity' of data. Do you mean aggregation/disaggregation level of data? Data availability is crucial for empirical analysis, and the main choice of researchers concerns how to perform the investigation with data at hand. The paper should report only the final choie of researchers and information on data actually employed in the investigation, not about all data potentially available, but not used.

In Section 4.2 the authors again complaint about data unavailaibility. Please avoid!

Section 4.3 reports both tables of estimated values and equations with the same estimated values. I think that tables give enough information.

Check all the paper for typos!

As a whole, I think you could employ less words to explain more cleary your work.

The paper is scientifically significant and the topic is very interesting for research.

Popular research methods were used and the results were correctly presented in the paper.

The conclusions are adequate, but the references related to the topic of the paper should be expanded.

It os necessary to review other similar researches, that is, to expand the discussion in the paper.
