Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The work entitled "Characterization of laser frequency stability by using phase-2 sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry" is well presented. It is clear and comprehensive.

The Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions sections are understandably clear, and the data is satisfactorily described.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper "Characterization of laser frequency stability by using phase sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry" provide a method to measure laser phase noise and frequency stability based on the phase sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry. The background theory and innovation are well interpreted. The accuracy of this method is also compared with direct optical heterodyning of the tested and more coherent reference lasers.
The author has done a comprehensive work and the technology of laser frequency stability measurement is also essential in the fabrication of frequency combs. However there are still a few flaws of this paper, especially the equations. For instance, in line 123, a blank space was left after the word "noise". In line 191, tp and td are not of the same height. In line 235, the equation is below the line....Besides, the equation 1-10 are placed in cells of a table. This also looks usual. My suggestion is that the paper can be published after the authors carefully check their format espcially the equations.

Reviewer 3 Report

The authors of this manuscript proposed a new method to measure the stability of single frequency narrow linewidth laser. This method is innovative and significant. I suggest some details should be revised.

1. in line 16:The use 15 of dual pulses generated by an acousto-optic modulator make it easy to adjust the time delay during. 'make' should be 'makes'.

2. in line 27:  extended cavity  semiconductor lasers (ECDL). 'ECDL' may be 'EDSL'.

3. Formula (5) and (6) are missing.

4. in line 157, In our case Np=4. The expression is not proper, I think.

5. The titles of Fig.2 ,3,4,5,6 are so long, and some description/content should be in the text.

6. in line 192, 'xx is shown on a-c'. should be 'xx is shown on Fig.2 a-c.

7. in line 244, the number of formula (11) is not correct, because in line 159, there is a formula numbered (11). (formula (5),(6) are missing.)

It is ok.
