Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The manuscript ID photonics-3209054 mainly presents an analysis about magneto-optical properties exhibited by magnetic garnet. The authors describe some applications related to the topic. Please see below a list of comments to the authors:

1.   The introduction should be improved in order to justify the importance of magnetic garnets in respect to other magnetic materials.

2.   A roadmap to easily see the evolution of the topic would be welcome.

3.   Some parameters related to the magneto-optical effect exhibited by magnetic garnets could be summarized in a table.

4.   Perspectives should be added in order that this review can be a base for future research. The authors are invited to see for instance low-dimensional magneto-optic systems: DOI 10.1088/0957-4484/27/3/032501

5.   The authors should state in the introduction what this work adds to literature in respect to previous publications related to potential applications related to magneto-optical properties in magnetic garnets. You can see for instance: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmmm.2023.170987

6.   Advantages and disadvantages of the different magnetic garnets analyzed could be confronted in a table.

7.   It is suggested to include a figure to easily visualize the methodology, the parameters considered and the main findings in this review.

8.   Only four 2024 references were considered. Please update the list of references until the period of this review stage.

9.   It is suggested to split the citations presented in collective form. This is in order to better justify each reference selected for the analysis and presentation of the topic.

10.               Besides the word “applications” should be removed from the keywords, in my opinion, the keywords should be better selected.

We would like to thank you for your careful review and comments. We answer to your comments as follows:

  1. The introduction should be improved in order to justify the importance of magnetic garnets in respect to other magnetic materials.

[Response 1] In the introduction, we made it clear that this review focuses on the Faraday effect of transparent magnetic materials and its applications, and the characteristics of magnetic garnets were described in comparison with other materials. (P.1 L.23-31, L.40-42)

  1. A roadmap to easily see the evolution of the topic would be welcome.

[Response 2] The brief contents described in each chapter of this review are shown at the end of Chapter 1 as a roadmap. (P.2 L.45-49)

  1. Some parameters related to the magneto-optical effect exhibited by magnetic garnets could be summarized in a table.

[Response 3] The parameters and focused properties of garnets considered in this review are summarized in Table 1 in the end of chapter 1.

  1. Perspectives should be added in order that this review can be a base for future research. The authors are invited to see for instance low-dimensional magneto-optic systems: DOI 10.1088/0957-4484/27/3/032501

[Response 4] In this review, we focus on Faraday rotation and its engineering applications, so we mentioned the contents you pointed out as another interesting topics at the end of Chapter 6. (P.16 L.390-394)

  1. The authors should state in the introduction what this work adds to literature in respect to previous publications related to potential applications related to magneto-optical properties in magnetic garnets. You can see for instance: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmmm.2023.170987

[Response 5] As already mentioned, this review focuses on the Faraday rotation of magnetic garnets and their applications. Although the high-entropy garnets are very interesting ongoing research topics, unfortunately, to our knowledge, there are no reports on their Faraday effect yet. Therefore, at the end of Chapter 6, we have limited ourselves to mention about high-entropy garnets as interesting future research. (P.16 L.387-390)

  1. Advantages and disadvantages of the different magnetic garnets analyzed could be confronted in a table.

[Response 6] Regarding the advantages and disadvantages of magnetic garnets, it is easy to point out that a large Faraday rotation angle is required for actual applications, but that even if the rotation angle is large, it is not suitable for actual applications if the transmittance is small. Other than that, it is difficult to summarize briefly because it depends on the engineering application you want to use it for. Therefore, at the end of Chapter 4, we summarized the important properties required for several applications shown in this review in table 2. (P.15)

  1. It is suggested to include a figure to easily visualize the methodology, the parameters considered and the main findings in this review.

[Response 7] As described in the answers to previous comments, there are various perspectives on the properties and applications of garnets introduced in this review, and it is difficult to summarize them briefly. The parameters that we focused on regarding the properties of garnet materials are summarized in Table 1, and the properties required for applications are summarized in Table 2.

  1. Only four 2024 references were considered. Please update the list of references until the period of this review stage.

[Response 8] Thank you for pointing out. Due to the topics of this review focuses on, the effects of element substitution on Faraday rotation properties of magnetic garnets were reported in old papers, but I have added some recent papers. (Refs. 10, 47, 82, 128,129, and 135)

  1. It is suggested to split the citations presented in collective form. This is in order to better justify each reference selected for the analysis and presentation of the topic.

[Response 9] Regarding citations to reference papers, we first list all the relevant papers at the beginning of each section, then we select the important ones and explained in latter parts. It would be possible to add explanations for all referred papers, but we think that would make less focused and more difficult to understand.

  1. Besides the word “applications” should be removed from the keywords, in my opinion, the keywords should be better selected.

[Response 10] Following your comments, we removed "applications" from the keywords and wrote specific terms of "isolator; imaging; magnetic hologram memory; MO neural network."

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

In this work Nakamura et al have written a review article on the Magneto-Optical Properties and applications of the Magnetic Garnets. First, the phenomenological of magneto-optical effect, the effects of element substitution on the properties such as Faraday rotation and optical absorbance of magnetic garnets are discussed. Second, interesting applications such as imaging technologies and other novel applications using the magneto-optical effect of magnetic garnets are presented. The manuscript is clearly written and methodologically structured and could be even be used as chapter in a book about magnetic materials. The paper is almost ready to be accepted. Some minor notes:

Figure 3-2: For (b) all data sets seem to come from Ref. [16]. However, for (a), there are three data sets for Y, but the reader can not understand which comes from Ref. [12], [17] or [18]. Similarly, the origin of the other data is unclear too. Please clarify.

Figures 3-5 and 3-6: Similar to my previous note, the authors should clarify which data set comes from which reference.

Figure 3-9: Same as above.

Figure 3-11: Here, for example, the origins are properly clarified.
