Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors have made an interesting update on the influence of diet on seminal parameters.

They must correct the font type in reference 38.

Author Response

Authors would like to thank Reviewer 1 for the careful revision made to our manuscript.

As suggested, "references section" was revised.

Reviewer 2 Report

1. The authors need to add the line numbers so the reviewers could better judge their work.

2. The manuscript requires language editing.

Page 1 "Apart from the idiopathic origin and the traditional risk factors (hormonal disorders, physical problems, chromosomal abnormalities, etc.), lifestyle factors, and in particular diet, may critically influence male fertility, due to its association with semen quality parameters, notably sperm count, concentration, and motility [3-7]." Although this goes to writing style, I believe such a long sentence should be simplified for the readers to better appreciate its meaning.

There are typos, page 6 lin 17# "plan" should be "plant".

The authors say "Previous works suggest a relationship between the adoption of MedDiet food patterns by men and greater reproductive success.", refs are missing in a lot of these claims. It's hard to judge without citations.

3. The authors should discuss the relationship between diet, metabolic health, and male reproductive health. Regarding the mechanisms of diet-related reproductive health, there are a few studies directly assessing this (Antioxid Redox Signal. 2023 Feb 23.doi: 10.1089/ars.2022.0049.), the authors should discuss these.

4. there is emerging interest in microbiome related to reproductive health. It would be good to include these.

Author Response

Authors would like to thank to Reviewer 2 for the critical revision he/she did to our manuscript.

Concerning comments and suggestions:

  1. Line numbers were included in the present file.
  2. The long sentence of the 2nd paragraph (page 1) was simplified, and typing errors were corrected. We also included references in all pertinent citations.
  3. As suggested, in the revised version of our manuscript we discuss the relationship between diet, metabolic health, and male reproductive health.
  4. The relevance of microbiome in reproductive health was also briefly explored in the present version.

All changes are highlighted in yellow.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear Authors,

Your paper it is a straightforward review on the important topic of the relation between Mediterranean diet and Male Fertility. The article is well structured but it can be improved by adding some summarized figures or tables in some part of the review. Also consider the high percentage of plagiarism.

Some sentences and paragraph don’t contain even one reference

In the section “3. Mechanisms of Mediterranean Diet Effects on Semen Parameters”, I recommend to add a figure (preferably) or table that could summarize what author describe in text.

Plagiarism is high 39%, it should be reduced

Comments for author File: Comments.pdf

Author Response

Authors would like to thank to Reviewer 3 for all the comments and sugestions made.

As sugested, we included the respective references whenever relevant.

All text was revised, and some topics added.

Reviewer 4 Report

This review focuses on the effect of the diet on the sperm quality. The information given is of general nature and it does not go into depth into the effects of different foods at cellular and molecular levels. Moreover, several affirmations are not supported by the corresponding bibliographic references.

The references section needs to be standardized.

Author Response

Authors would like to thank Reviewer 4 for the careful revision made to our manuscript.

In the present version of the manuscript, we included the corresponding bibliographic references throughout the text.

As suggested, "references section" was revised and standardized.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors addressed all my concerns except for language editing.

Author Response

Once again, authors thank the Reviewer 2 for all the comments and sugestions.

In the present version of the manuscript, language was revised.

Reviewer 3 Report

The manuscript has improved significantly after revision.

Author Response

Once again, authors thank the Reviewer 3 for all the comments and sugestions.

Reviewer 4 Report

Authors have revised the manuscript and incorporated the modifications requested by this reviewer; nevertheless I still consider that the content of manuscript is of general nature. Moreover, considering that the name of the journal is Endocrines, little information is given of how the diet may affect endocrine imbalance. ,

Author Response

Once again, authors thank the Reviewer 4 for all the comments and sugestions.

In the present version of the manuscript, following Reviewer´s suggestion, we have included some notes concerning the crosstalk between diet and endocrine inbalance. Changes are highlighted in yellow.
