Prof. Dr. Francisco Taveira Pinto Appointed Editor-in-Chief of Coasts

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Francisco Taveira Pinto has been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of Coasts (ISSN: 2673-964X).

Prof. Dr. Francisco Taveira Pinto is a full professor of hydraulics, water resources and environment and coastal and port engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering and Georesources (DECG), Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), Portugal. He is Director of the DECG, and Coordinator of the Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment Group of the Institute for Sustainable Construction (ICS) of the FEUP. He is deemed a specialist in hydraulics and water resources (coastal and port engineering) by the Order of Engineers and Vice-President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Water Partnership. He was Director of the Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment Division, a member of the executive committee of EUCC—the Coastal Union Mediterranean Centre, President of the Board and of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Water Resources Association (APRH) and Coordinator of the Specialization in Hydraulics and Water Resources of the Order of Engineers. He was President of the Board of the Hydraulics and Water Resources Institute of the FEUP.

His main research interests are maritime hydraulics, coastal engineering and marine energy, having participated in several national and European projects. He was involved in the organization of several national and international conferences, namely the Littoral Congress Series of the Eurocoast Federation, International Conference on Coastal Conservation and Management and CoastLab. He is the Coordinator of the DECG-FEUP research group on Sea Energy and Hydraulic Structures. The group is dedicated to the numerical and physical modeling of wave energy extraction prototypes, as well as to the study of the interaction of wave action with coastal hydraulic structures. He was the editor of several conference proceedings, as well as a member of several scientific and organizing committees. He was the coordinator of several R&D and consulting projects. Under the Ph.D. Program in Civil Engineering and the Integrated Master of Civil Engineering, he supervised 13 Ph.D. theses and 70 M.Sc. dissertations. He is a reviewer of several international scientific journals.

The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Dr. Francisco Taveira Pinto, who shared his vision for the journal with us, as well as his views of the research area and open access publishing:

1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take the role as its Editor-in-Chief?
An invitation is always something appealing. Then, the opportunity to be the Editor-in-Chief of a journal related to the work that I have been involved in for the last 35 years (“coasts”) is another important appeal.

2. What is your vision for the journal?
I would like to help Coasts become a reference journal as much as others in this field, because I also think there is space for that, and also because coastal issues are being considered now at a high level.

3. What does the future of this field of research look like?
Since coastal issues are becoming more important due to societal pressures (at different levels), climate change, extreme events, erosion problems, safety issues, etc., I think this field of research will increase in terms of volume and importance without forgetting aspects related to marine renewable energy harvesting.

4. What do you think of the development of open access in the publishing field?
I think this is important in terms of allowing better dissemination of the research work performed and reaching a wider audience and scope of applications.

We warmly welcome Prof. Dr. Francisco Taveira Pinto as our Editor-in-Chief and look forward to his valuable input for the continued success of Coasts.
