In 2021, MDPI celebrated the 25th anniversary of its original foundation. This was an important milestone for MDPI, and a great opportunity to celebrate our past achievements and forge a path forward.
To mark this special year, a campaign was launched with a set of initiatives to focus on MDPI’s key objective: to deliver insight faster, showing how MDPI is an accessible, reliable, and valued partner to the global scientific community.

We took this opportunity to establish a timeline to reflect on our progress and celebrate some major milestones from MDPI's first 25 years. The report also highlights our initiatives and achievements from the past year.
In 2021, we gained a greater share of the open access market in terms of total publication output: 14% of Gold Open Access content appeared within MDPI journals.
MDPI's mission continues to be about putting the author at the center of everything we do, and ensuring that rigorous, high-quality research is disseminated as widely and as quickly as possible.
