Dr. Reto Asmis Appointed Section Editor-in-Chief of the Section “Health Outcomes of Antioxidants and Oxidative Stress” in Antioxidants

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Reto Asmis has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Section “Health Outcomes of Antioxidants and Oxidative Stress” in Antioxidants (ISSN: 2076-3921, IF 7.675).

Dr. Asmis is a former senior associate dean of the Graduate School and currently a tenured professor of Internal Medicine at the Wake Forest Medical School. He received his diploma in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. His research interests include thiol redox signaling, macrophage biology, nutrition and dietary antioxidants, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Asmis has published over 90 peer-reviewed publications and holds two patents.

His training record includes directorships/co-directorships of T-32 and R25 training grants as well as of a number of graduate programs, including Biomedical Engineering and the Integrated Biomedical Sciences programs at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Asmis has mentored over 30 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty as well as numerous undergraduate and high school students. He also served on and chaired both American Heart Association and NIH study Sections and is a regular reviewer for several European granting agencies, including the European Science Foundation.

The following is a short Q&A with Dr. Reto Asmis, who shared his vision for the Section with us as well as his views on the research area.

  1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take the role as its Section Editor-in-Chief?
The field of antioxidants, especially related to human health, has grown tremendously and has matured into a highly competitive, state-of-the-art and promising research area. Following and supporting this area of research is both exciting and rewarding to me.
  1. What is your vision for the Section?
To bring the Section to the next level of quality in science by publishing both high-quality primary research and state-of-the-art reviews, on par with the top journals in medicine, pharmacology, nutrition, biochemistry, biology and biotechnology.
  1. What does the future of this field of research look like, in your view?
Novel therapies and new compounds for the treatment of human diseases, cutting-edge research and new technologies, and the highest standard in publishing scientific data.
  1. What do you think of the development of Open Access in the publishing field?
I am a great believer in rigor, reproducibility and transparency in both research and peer review of scientific data. This requires that all scientists have access to the best and newest science. That is only possible through Open Access.
  1. Who should contribute to this Section?
Biochemists, cell biologists, molecular biologists, pharmacologists, medicinal chemists, nutritional and medical researchers and others conducting state-of the-art research in antioxidants, oxidative stress and redox signaling related to human health and disease.

We wish Dr. Reto Asmis every success in his new position, and we look forward to his contributions to the journal.
