Mitochondria play an increasingly central role in the context of cellular physiology. These organelles possess their own DNA (mtDNA), which is functionally coordinated with the nuclear genome as well as being involved in multiple metabolic functions to power life, and emerge as crucial cell components in a variety of diseases.
